Laurene Powell Jobs named to Stanford's board of trustees

Laurene Powell Jobs, Silicon Valley's richest woman and a Stanford MBA, has been named to the university's board of trustees.

Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder and tech visionary Steve Jobs, has a long-standing interest in education. She founded the nonprofit Emerson Collective, currently working to pass the Dream Act.

She also is president of the board of College Track, an after-school program that helps disadvantaged youths prepare for college, and sits on the board of directors of NewSchools Venture Fund, a venture philanthropy firm aimed at enhancing public education for low-income students.

She made this year's Forbes Billionaires List with a net worth of $9 billion, making her the world's 13th wealthiest woman. Her husband had largely placed the fortune in trusts before he died Oct. 5, 2011, of pancreatic cancer.

Powell Jobs earned ?a master of business administration from Stanford's Graduate School of Business in 1991, where she met her future husband at his lecture to the class, according to biographer Walter Isaacson. She has bachelor's degrees in political science and in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

The Palo Alto resident has three children.

As a member of the board of trustees, she will share responsibility for setting the direction of the university and ensuring its continued well-being.

Her five-year term begins in October. Other members of the Stanford board include

venture capitalists Steven Denning from General Atlantic and Bruce Dunlevie from Benchmark Capital; Ronald B. Johnson, the CEO of J.C. Penney; and Jerry Yang, Yahoo co-founder and former CEO.
