Georgian opposition supporters flood capital

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? An estimated 100,000 opposition supporters rallied in Georgia's capital Saturday in a show of strength days before a parliamentary election that presents the toughest challenge to the future of President Mikhail Saakashvili's government since he took office in 2004.

Many residents of the capital, Tbilisi, long ago turned against Saakashvili. They are disturbed by what they describe as his authoritarian rule, pointing to his control over parliament, the courts and the prosecutor's office.

"He created a system of oppression and covered it with the pretty facade of democracy," said Dali Dvalishvili, who attended the boisterous campaign rally. Although trained as a lawyer, the 28-year-old woman said she was unable to work in a system "where the prosecutor's office dictates everything."

Under Saakashvili, the former Soviet republic has become a U.S. ally and worked toward closer integration with NATO and the European Union. In Monday's election, the president is under pressure to prove his commitment to democracy by holding a free and fair vote.

The election has added significance because it ushers in a new political system that will give greater powers to the parliament and prime minister. After Saakashvili's second and last term ends next year, the party that has a majority in parliament will have the right to name the prime minister, who will acquire many of the powers now held by the president.

Saakashvili's United National Movement, which now holds nearly 80 percent of the seats in parliament, is up against Georgian Dream, a coalition formed by Bidzina Ivanishvili, a billionaire businessman who made his fortune in Russia.

Most observers see the race as too close to call, although they give the governing party the edge.

The mood was upbeat Saturday as people of all ages gathered on Freedom Square for Ivanishvili's campaign rally. Many wore Georgian Dream T-shirts in blue, white or black.

"Saakashvili's system based on lawlessness and torture should be destroyed," Ivanishvili told the crowd.

Saakashvili's campaign was hit hard by the release two weeks ago of shocking videos showing prisoners in a Tbilisi jail being beaten and sodomized. The government moved quickly to stem the anger, replacing Cabinet ministers blamed for the abuse and arresting prison staff, but many saw the videos as illustrating the excesses of his government.

When Saakashvili took over Georgia in early 2004, it was close to being a failed state. He succeeded in wiping out the crime bosses who ruled the streets, eradicating petty corruption, restoring basic public services and enacting reforms that led to high economic growth. Poverty and unemployment rates, however, remain painfully high.

"Palaces are built, but the people live in poverty," 35-year-old Georgy Dzotsenidze, who was among the opposition supporters, said. "Not to mention the sadism, the torture in the prisons. All of this was done intentionally so that the people would be afraid."

Ivanishvili's support lies in the educated, professional and cultural classes of Tbilisi, where about a third of Georgia's 4.5 million people live. Some of them, including prominent theater actors and directors, have benefitted directly from his largesse. Now worth about $6.4 billion, Ivanishvili says he has spent a total of $1.7 billion to help Georgia, most notably paying government officials' salaries when Saakashvili first came to power and buying patrol cars for a new police force.

Saakashvili has tried to discredit his former patron by suggesting he has ties with Georgian crime bosses now living abroad. Ivanishvili addressed the accusations on Saturday.

"Saakashvili tries to convince the population that if we win, criminals will come to power in Georgia," the opposition leader told the crowd. "This is not so. The time of organized crime bosses and criminals in Georgia is over. We will restore order based on democracy and the law."

He also countered Saakashvili's contention that he will take Georgia back under Russian domination.

"The U.S. and NATO members are our strategic allies," Ivanishvili said. "Our country will become a worthy member of the European community."

UPDATE 4-Spain debt rises on aid to banks, regions

Sat Sep 29, 2012 6:06pm BST

* Spain details cuts to health, education

* Debt-to-GDP ratio to rise to 90.5 percent by end-2013

* Budget deficit rises to 7.4 percent including bank aid

* Gross debt issuance rises to 207.2 billion euros in 2013

By Andr?s Gonz?lez

MADRID, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Spain's debt level and borrowing needs are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for international aid, as it pours funds in to cash-strapped regions and an ailing banking system, its budget showed on Saturday.

Spain's debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to Parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008.

The budget aims to make savings of around 13 billion euros ($16.72 billion) next year by cutting spending by the public ministries, education, health and infrastructure investments and freezing public workers' wages.

"This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe," Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering the budget.

Spain is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession.

Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have fuelled doubts Spain can fix its problems without help.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout.

Rajoy, who said he is considering the conditions behind any aid request, is widely expected to wait until after regional elections in Galicia and the Basque Country before taking any decision.

RISING BORROWING NEEDS

The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on.

Spain will also slash state funding to commerce, tourism and small, and medium-sized companies by 18.8 percent and infrastructure by 13.5 percent.

The government will increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of 207.2 billion euros after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of 186.1 billion euros.

The cost of financing its debt, as benchmark 10-year bond yields rise to above 6 percent, is expected to increase to 38.6 billion euros, or 3.6 percent of GDP, in 2013, the budget showed.

The Treasury must pay debt redemptions of 159.2 billion euros in 2013, up slightly from 153.2 billion euros in 2012.

The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due to a greater debt on the back of the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document.

The instruments include the power deficit bond programme, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain's part in aid granted to Ireland, Greece and Portugal and the recapitalisation loan for the country's banks, it said.

Brussels on Thursday said the budget was a large step in the right direction. But many economists expressed doubt that Spain's conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debt-servicing costs rise.

"My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic," said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding that he expected the plans to be revised as with every other budget over the last four years.

The budget is based on the assumption that GDP will shrink by 0.5 percent in 2013 year on year, though most economists expect a deeper slump.

DEFICIT JUMP

Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account.

The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered.

"Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren't included ... they're considered one-offs," Montoro said.

Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain's European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers.

On Friday, an independent report showed Spanish banks will need up to 59.3 billion euros in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn.

The budget details on Saturday showed Spain's debt ratio included 30 billion euros of the planned 100-billion-euro aid request for the country's banks.

LeBron James: Champion Heat can be better

(AP) ? LeBron James looked at the assembled talent in the Miami Heat locker room, and one word came to mind.

"Scary," he said.

Translated, that means James thinks the Heat will be even better than they were a season ago. Oddly, James' teammates expect the same from him.

After a season where he won just about everything besides Powerball ? his third MVP award, his first NBA Finals MVP award and, of course, his first NBA championship ? James is going back to work. He and the Heat convened for their annual media day Friday, the prelude to Saturday morning's opening practice and the first step toward what the Heat hope is another championship push.

"We can be better than we were this past season," James said, on the day when he got sized for his first championship ring. "Are we better right now than we were just a couple months ago? Of course not. ... But we have the potential to be better.

"We have the potential to be a lot better. That is scary."

Chances are, the Heat will have to be better than they were last season to hoist another championship trophy next June. As if they weren't the team on radar screens across the NBA already once James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh decided to team up in Miami during the summer of 2010, winning a title will only make them more of a target.

And then adding a player like Ray Allen, whose last NBA game was Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals in Miami when he played for the Boston Celtics, only raises the ante that much more.

"We have one target," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Friday. "And that's Miami."

There was plenty going on around the Heat on Friday, some of it newsy, some of it more humorous, as typically is the case at a media day.

Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh talked about how they're healing after injuries struck in last season's playoffs. Allen and Rashard Lewis ? free-agent additions ? posed for photos in new Heat uniforms. Shane Battier talked about the NBA's pet-peeve issue, flopping, hilariously calling it "a silent killer." Udonis Haslem was followed by a camera crew to, as he said, document "The Little 12," what he calls everyone not in the "Big Three" club of Wade, Bosh and James.

Haslem's cameras might have been the only ones not on James, who hasn't spoken publicly much since the Olympics ended.

"He's not on cruise control, no," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said when asked about James. "He's as driven a professional as I've been around. He understands not only his legacy, but team legacy and the opportunity that this team and organization has. And he savors that. He's the ultimate competitor."

It took James nine years to win that long-coveted first title, after leading the Heat past the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games. His clinching performance was a classic ? a triple-double, 26 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds. James came out with 3:01 remaining and the celebrating started, waving his arms and jumping on the sideline, then wrapping anyone and everyone he could reach in massive embraces.

So began his summer vacation. It lasted about a week.

His commitment to USA Basketball and the London Games started only a few days after the Heat championship parade. When that ended ? with a gold medal ? he jumped back to his personal business matters, including a trip to China and a decision to switch agents from Leon Rose to longtime friend Rich Paul.

There were more workouts with Thunder star Kevin Durant, just like last year, and a little bit of vacationing thrown into the mix.

Now, it's all about basketball business.

"I've thought that for a long time that I'm the best player," James said. "That's the way I approach the game. Anytime I step on the floor, I think I've told you guys that before, I want to be the best player on the floor. That's just the confidence I play with. That's not taking away from all these other great players that we have in this game today."

He averaged 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists in this past regular season, then upped the ante to 30.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists in the playoffs.

Monster numbers, and the Heat can't wait to see what he does for an encore.

"Do it again," Bosh said, when asked what to expect from James. "Just continue to be himself. He's a hard worker, naturally. He doesn't have to repeat what he did last year. This year's a new year. It's going to present different challenges and we're going to have to overcome them. He's going to have to overcome them. We're all going to have our team challenges and personal challenges that come our way."

James said he found time to work on some aspects of his game during the offseason, though he obviously didn't have anywhere near the same break he had after the 2010-11 season ? which was lengthened by a lockout, and didn't have an Olympics in there, either.

"He's on a hell of a run," Battier said. "It's almost like throwing a no-hitter. You don't want to talk about it. You just want to ride it out and see where it goes. But if there's one guy who could top what he's done in calendar 2012, it's No. 6. I wouldn't count him out or bet against him."

I'm Spantacus! Slave ants rebel

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

10_zoo_ameisen_sklavenrebellion.jpg

(Image: Alexandra Achenbach)

Their home has been invaded, their queen killed and they have been forced to rear the offspring of their enemy, but these ants are fighting back. Here workers from the host species Temnothorax longispinosus are killing a pupa of colony parasite Protomognathus americanus.

Susanne Foitzik from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany - who first discovered this rebellious behaviour - and her colleagues have now shown that it is more common than previously thought. Studying populations in West Virginia, New York and Ohio, they found that on average 95 per cent of the parasitic ant larvae survived to pupa stage - but then the slave ants attacked or neglected them. Only 45 per cent of the parasite's offspring survived to adulthood. In comparison, the survival rate for host pupae in their own free-living nests is 85 per cent.

The slave rebellions did not entirely overthrow the oppressors, but they did significantly slow down the growth of the parasite population - and seem to be altruistic. Foitzik said: "The enslaved workers do not directly benefit from the killings because they do not reproduce."

The researchers have suggested that the slave ants' mistreatment of the parasites mean the slave-makers were less likely to invade neighbouring closely related colonies.

Court fast-tracks some green card applications

(AP) ? A federal appeals court has ruled that immigration officials must give priority status to thousands of green card applicants who lost their place in line for U.S. residency when they turned 21.

A narrowly divided 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided Wednesday that the United States Citizen and Immigration Services wrongly determined the applicants were no longer eligible for special visas as children of green card holders after they turned 21.

The immigration service said those children who "aged out" during the process lost their place in line, even if the parents' application took years to process.

Under U.S. immigration law, children 21 and older cannot immigrate under their parents' applications for green cards.

The court ruled 6-5 court otherwise, saying the applicants may keep their "priority date" established when their parents filed for a derivative visa for their children.

"Tens of thousands of children living in the U.S. or abroad who have 'aged out' of the green card process would reclaim their place in line based on this decision," said Carl Shusterman, one of the lawyers representing the applicants.

The ruling held that Congress meant to aid these applicants with the 2002 passage of the Child Status Protection Act. The act meant to preserve the original date of application of a minor who turned 21 during the pendency of the parents' application, the court ruled.

"We conclude that the plain language of the CSPA unambiguously grants automatic conversion and priority date retention to aged-out derivative beneficiaries," Judge Mary Murguia wrote for the majority.

The court ruled that immigration officials were wrongly forcing many of these applicants to file new applications for residency, putting their application at the bottom of the pile. The new ruling requires immigration officials to consider the original application date while processing the application for residency.

The opinion reversed a trial court judge, who tossed out a class-action lawsuit filed by legal U.S. residents whose children were removed from residency consideration under their application when they turned 21.

The federal government could ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the matter.

A U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson could not be reached after hours in Washington D.C.

Judge Milan Smith wrote a dissenting opinion. Smith called the 2002 law ambiguous and said it's unclear what Congress meant with its passage. Further, he said the new class of applicants now eligible for priority consideration will likely bump other, more clear applications of other seeking residency further down the line.

Chrome for Android now fully compatable with x86 devices

Android Central

Google's Chrome for Android browser, much loved by those with an Android 4.0 and above device, has finally been updated to be fully compatible with x86 devices. This is a big deal, as one of the snags when it came to Android devices running Intel chips (OK, there aren't that many yet) was incompatibility of apps -- even popular ones like Chrome. What this shows us is that Google is devoted to updating its own apps to work on the Intel platform, and hopefully now other app developers will follow suit with their own updates.

We've had a look at a few Intel devices at this point, most recently the Motorola RAZR i, and hopefully with application support like this we'll see more in the future.

My Week With PT Anderson, Day Six: The Master

Jeff ends his journey with Anderson's latest, a character drama revolving around a cult.

86%

After years of waiting (and rumors about its storyline supposedly being inspired by the life and times of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard) Paul Thomas Anderson's sixth full-length film, The Master, is finally in wide release -- bringing us to the conclusion of our Anderson watching series with one of the more widely anticipated (and hotly debated) movies of the year. How does it fit into his Oscar-nominated filmography? Let's discuss.

Anderson has said he was inspired by a quote pointing out that people often gravitate to spiritual movements during postwar periods, and in very general surface terms, that's what The Master is about -- if you've read up on your Scientology, you can draw certain parallels between Hubbard and the movie's cult-shepherding Master, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), but if you go in not knowing your Scientologists from your Moonies, you should still be able to recognize the pattern: When a society goes from a wartime environment where everything is at stake to the numbing conformity of peacetime, people tend to go searching for something to latch onto.

People like Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), the Pacific-stationed World War II soldier we meet in the movie's opening frames. From our first glimpse of Freddie, we can tell he's a troubled individual, and we survey the damage in a series of largely dialogue-free shots that paw over familiar ground for Anderson: Man using nature; man using man; man struggling gracelessly with sex, lust, and loneliness. We quickly learn that Freddie has a thirst for peculiar cocktails (in the first of many wince-inducing scenes, he celebrates the announcement of V-J Day by siphoning straight torpedo fuel for some improvised moonshine), as well as enough emotional turmoil to earn a PTSD diagnosis.

If you've read anything about The Master, you know this is a role Phoenix absolutely crushed, and it's his prowling, jittery energy that really drives the action in the movie. He's a feral presence, particularly in the opening act -- he struggles to put on a happy face during a session with a VA psychologist, makes a vain, half-hearted attempt to fit into postwar society with a job as a department store photographer, and manages to make a mess out of a stint as a migrant farmworker, all the while giving off the raw, dark energy of a man who's barely walking the line between volcanic self-loathing and animal self-preservation. It's always fun to try and spot the seams when an actor tries to disappear into physical tics as pronounced as Phoenix's here, but he leaves nothing behind.

Anderson has also said that portions of The Master's screenplay were taken from unused scenes for There Will Be Blood, and that makes sense; you can detect a certain whiff of that movie's dynamic here, once Freddie crosses paths with Dodd. But unlike Blood's Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday, Freddie and Dodd aren't opposites, or even really enemies; although it's still very much a struggle for power, their relationship is a lot more complicated, with enough love and heartbreak for a dozen romantic dramas.

Dodd initially appears to be the one in command -- and the key to a safe, happy future for our anguished drifter -- but after our first few moments in his presence, we start getting hints that behind his self-made sect's glowing fa?ade (and his own charismatic persona) lurks a different kind of darkness, as well as another power struggle between the members of Dodd's family (led by his quietly terrifying wife Peggy, played to steely perfection by Amy Adams). Fittingly for a guy with a fondness for borderline poisonous hooch, Freddie proves a volatile addition to the mix -- not only because his presence aggravates the tension, but because he gives off an unpredictably violent energy that's always threatening to erupt.

It's a story ripe with potential, and one that finds Anderson delivering some of his most beautifully composed shots. From a directorial standpoint, The Master really is the work of a master; he's firmly in control here, spooning out a visual feast that includes a number of familiar ingredients (he still likes framing shots with missing information, and he's really in love with putting his characters in the middle of hallways, ramps, doorways, trails -- you name it) while markedly increasing his use of close-ups, as well as the sense of detached stasis that pervaded There Will Be Blood. Looming over it all, and adding to the general sense of unease, is Blood composer Jonny Greenwood's score, which tells its own story with sweeping, sometimes discordant movements.

As with any Anderson picture, the question of What It All Means looms large over every frame, and The Master has already generated plenty of heated discussion. There are critics who see it as a grand statement on the search for meaning in modern consumer-driven American culture, there are those who interpret it as a homoerotic love story, and there are those who think it's all just a bunch of thinly scripted hooey. As Roger Ebert put it, "The Master is fabulously well-acted and crafted, but when I reach for it, my hand closes on air."

Personally, I started off in the first camp, but as the movie wore on, I found myself edging into the third. It's certainly Anderson's chilliest movie; it sweeps you up while you're watching, but it always keeps you at a distance, so while you're trying to untangle its themes later on -- themes that Anderson seems to make a point out of refusing to fully address -- it's easy to wonder what the point of the whole thing really is. The Master lingers, but not in a particularly enjoyable way.

It can be argued that it's unfair to expect high art from a film, and Anderson himself insists that his movies are the stories of people, not themes or ideas -- which is certainly more than fair. But with The Master, Anderson the screenwriter fails Anderson the director -- the characters are just sketches and their actions are inscrutable, so if they aren't being used to tell a broader story, then they don't really serve any purpose at all. Sometimes it feels like we're seeing half a movie; the effect is unpleasant, unmooring.

But on the other hand, it's hard to look at The Master in the context of modern American cinema and come away judging it too harshly. As frustrating as its tendency to elide can be, it's still a film that refuses to talk down to its audience. (It may accomplish that by refusing to speak to its audience at all, but still.) It's beautiful in an era when true cinematography is hard to find, it's deeply ambiguous in a studio system that prizes the lowest common denominator, and it contains some of the most powerful acting you're liable to see all year. If it's a failure for Anderson, maybe it's still a victory for filmgoers who want to be treated like adults -- who want to consider and discuss what they've seen over a period of days and weeks, instead of forgetting the whole thing before they're even out of the theater parking lot.

On those terms, I appreciated The Master, and I'm glad Anderson is out there fighting the good fight, proving mainstream audiences still want something more than mindless entertainment -- but I wouldn't watch it again, despite the prevailing notion that it's a film that needs to be seen two or three times to truly appreciate. At one point in the movie, there's an exchange that goes as follows:

"I don't understand it."

"I don't either -- that's why we're here."

That about sums up the whole experience for me -- and fittingly, as I walked out of the theater, Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" was playing on the PA system. I had to laugh; for film fans, The Master might be the biggest Rickroll of the year.

Recipe: Mixed Bean Masala with Fragrant Yellow Rice Recipes ...

2012_09_25-BeanMasala01.jpgMy stepdad brought Indian home cooking into my life. He and my mother had been high school sweethearts, American students at an international school in the foothills of the Himalayas where my stepdad had grown up, stuffing himself on dal and pappadums throughout childhood and cultivating a lifelong craving for fragrant vegetarian curries. Thanks to him and to recipes like this mixed bean masala, it's a craving I now share. Quick, healthy and economical, it's an easy recipe to double and freeze in preparation for chilly winter nights, when the scent of onion, ginger and spices bubbling on the stove will warm up the whole house.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala02.jpg

This recipe is a riff on chana masala ? a curry of spiced chickpeas in a gingery tomato sauce ? using any type of cooked bean you happen to have on hand. You can use just one type of bean, but for color and texture variety, I like using a mixture. (I doubled the recipe for the batch pictured above, and used a mix of white beans, black beans and chickpeas.) Although plain white or brown rice is a fine accompaniment, my favorite way to eat curries like these is spooned over turmeric-spiced yellow rice, which looks special, but is just as easy to make as plain rice.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala03.jpg

The key to the tomato sauce is blending the onion, garlic and ginger into a smooth paste that is added to the pot after the dry spices have been fried in a little oil. The warmed spices and aromatic paste meld with the tomatoes into a smooth and very flavorful sauce. After adding the beans, some fresh cilantro, and chilies if you like it spicy, you let everything simmer for 30 minutes, just enough time to make a pot of yellow rice, and then dinner is served.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala04.jpg

One batch is enough to give my two-person household dinner and enough leftovers for a couple of lunches, but when I really want to maximize my time in the kitchen, I double the recipe and freeze the extra for future meals. The rice recipe can be doubled and frozen too; as long as it is kept separate from the sauce until serving, it won't become mushy, and you'll have a nourishing meal in the freezer, ready to heat when you need it.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala05.jpg

Mixed Bean Masala

Makes 6 servings

1 onion
2 cloves garlic
1-inch piece of ginger, peeled
1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon salt (more if canned tomatoes are unsalted)
1 28-ounce can chopped tomatoes
2 15-ounce cans beans, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons cilantro, coarsely chopped, plus more for serving
Chopped fresh chilies or red pepper flakes to taste (optional)
Fragrant Yellow Rice, for serving (recipe below)
Plain yogurt, for serving (optional)

Roughly chop the onions, garlic and ginger. Process in a food processor or blender until a smooth paste forms, adding up to 1 tablespoon water if needed.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and add the cumin, garam masala and coriander. Fry the spices for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant. Add the onion-ginger paste and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring, until most of the added water has evaporated. Add the salt, tomatoes, beans, cilantro and chilies or pepper flakes, if using. Bring to a boil and lower heat. Simmer uncovered 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasoning. Garnish with additional chopped cilantro and serve over rice, with a dollop of yogurt on the side.

Fragrant Yellow Rice

Adapted from Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking. Makes about 6 cups cooked rice

2 cups jasmine rice
2 cups water
1 bay leaf
2-inch piece of cinnamon stick
3 whole cloves
3/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter or olive oil

Rinse the rice 2 or 3 times and drain. Add the rice, water, bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and salt to a medium size pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cover, turn the heat to low and cook for 10 minutes. Remove pot from heat and let sit, still covered, for 10 minutes. Uncover and remove the bay leaf, cinnamon stick and cloves. Add butter or oil and stir.

Additional Notes
? If you want to substitute another type of rice (basmati, brown, etc.), increase the amount of water and cooking time according to the package directions.

? To freeze, let finished stew cool, then pack into freezer bags or freezer-safe containers and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Rice can also be frozen in a separate container. To reheat the beans, thaw in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave, and warm in a pot on the stove until bubbling. The rice reheats best covered in the microwave.

Global growth fears keep Asia stocks in check

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were held in check Tuesday by a host of concerns about the global economy.

Worries about the state of the world economy worsened after Germany's Ifo index of business confidence fell for a fifth consecutive month, evidence that even Europe's largest and so far strongest economy is being hurt by the region's debt crisis.

Stocks have risen in recent weeks as the U.S. Federal Reserve and monetary authorities in other major economies announced measures to support growth. The European Central Bank unveiled a new plan to restore investor confidence in the government finances of the 17 countries that use the euro. The most recent indicators, however, suggest the global economy is still slowing down.

"The near term outlook is likely to remain one of caution until some progress in the Eurozone is in evidence. However, growth concerns suggest any improvement in sentiment will be tenuous at best," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.2 percent to 9,048.55 after zigzagging earlier. The yen's strength weighed down shares.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.1 percent to 20,669.16. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.6 percent to 1,992.30. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.3 percent to 4,371.20. Benchmarks in mainland China, Taiwan and the Philippines fell. Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand rose.

Among individual stocks, Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Co. fell 2.1 percent. The company, which manufactures Apple's iPhones, resumed production at a factory in northern China that employs 79,000 people after unrest on Sunday.

Falling commodity prices due to worries about the global economy slammed mining shares. Australia's OZ Minerals Ltd. fell 3 percent. Mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. slid 2 percent.

Gold prices slumped, taking related stocks with them. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Group Co., China's largest gold miner, lost 1.6 percent.

Analysts say Europe's debt crisis will remain a key concern. Spain is due to unveil a new series of cost-cutting measures and structural reforms that could pave the way for a demand for financial aid from its fellow eurozone countries. Spanish stock and bond markets have been volatile in recent days as hopes that Madrid will apply for aid alternated with concern that it was delaying the move. Spain has been reluctant to ask since such assistance comes with strings attached.

"We still have a big overhang from Europe. The big question is whether Spain will ask for a bailout," said Andrew Sullivan, principal sales trader at Piper Jaffray in Hong Kong.

Wall Street closed lower Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.2 percent to 13,558.92. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 0.2 percent to 1,459.89. The Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.6 percent to 3,160.78.

In currency markets, the euro rose slightly to $1.2937 from $1.2935 in late trading Monday while the dollar was slightly down at 77.80 yen from 77.86 yen.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was up 23 cents to $92.16 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 96 cents to settle at $91.93 on Monday.

Dear ShareCG Member:

ShareCG was conceived in 2007 at my son Jacob?s insistence. Jake?s now a lawyer, but even then his debate skills and logical thinking convinced us that there was a need to ?develop an open sharing site to bring together worldwide artists and animators of all levels of expertise.? Our goal was to provide a friendly and graphical platform that would be easy to use and perfect for presenting art, animation, 3D models and for delivering tutorials and other educational materials to help the site?s users display their creative achievements and become more proficient in their craft.

We believed that if we provided a great platform ?they would come,? and you did.? But, we also had to find a way to fund our efforts so that we could continue to build out the site to meet the needs of a growing audience.? We succumbed to the idea of funding our efforts with banner advertising even though we would have preferred to have a site that was free of advertisements.? ??I have personally heard from hundreds of users complaining about the site?s flashing and distracting banners and I agree with them 100% but felt that we didn?t have a choice.

Now, after five years of experiencing the banner ad model we have yet to generate the revenue needed to pay for this site.? In fact, ShareCG has been running in the red and only kept alive and supported by re-directing funds from our other properties.? But, just chugging along without being able to provide timely new innovations to our audience is not a solution for either us or for you.

We are considering changing the ShareCG business model from banner ads to a subscription model.? I am proposing that members subscribe at just $9.99 a year for a banner free ShareCG that will have the resources to add services that will make the site a better place to visit and that will bring the community closer together.? We have a number of projects planned and ready to go that will:

  • Add ?Friends? to bring true social media and collaboration to the site
  • Provide expanded statistics for each user so you?ll know when and who viewed your video or downloaded any of your uploads
  • Re-design and expand the home page to include the latest uploads and blog entries, ?user speak? editorial, trial software, challenges, industry and educational newsletters, forums, news, jobs and more.
  • Add the ability for you to sell your creations like 3D Models and Poser and DAZ assets directly from ShareCG.

Most importantly we will encourage and facilitate on-going open discussions so that we can continually be even more responsive to your ideas and suggestions.? As a subscriber you will become a stake holder and part owner of ShareCG with a vested interest and a voice in making the site a better place for you.

This is a critical make or break moment for ShareCG and I need to know that whatever we decide to do is in your interest and in the interest of making ShareCG the best it can be.? So, please leave a comment here or write back to me with your thoughts including your outrage, your support, your ideas and your suggestions (support@sharecg.com).? I will publish the bulk of your responses in this blog so all users can watch and weigh into the conversation.

Thank you very much for being a ShareCG member and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

David Heller
President
Internet Business Systems, Inc. (ShareCG)

PS: ?On a similar but ad-free site that is focused on Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing (www.mechspot.com) ?we have already designed and deployed the ability to track downloads and offer a unique capability that allows users to tie related assets together (http://tinyurl.com/9td7x83).? Since Mechspot does not have any banner advertisements you might want visit to see what ShareCG will look like without them.? (Although Mechspot is currently under development and login access is currently limited you will be able to get a feel for what the near future of ShareCG can be as a subscription model.)

Glacial youth therapy for the Scandinavian landscape

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The high elevation flat surfaces characteristic of the Norwegian landscape are in geologically terms young, according to a paper in Nature Geoscience.

In a paper recently published in Nature Geoscience, researchers from the University of Bergen (UiB) and ETH Zurich have demonstrated that ice sheets have extensively shaped the fjords of Norway for the last 2.8 million years.

"However, the massive sediment record deposited offshore Norway during this period tells us a more complex story," explains Postdoctoral Fellow Philippe Steer at UiB's Department of Earth Science and the first author of the paper. "Ice sliding during glacial periods also resulted in eroding the present-day flattish surfaces that form the high-elevation parts of the Scandinavian landscape."

Contradicting previous views

The conclusion of this new study by Steer and his collaborators in Bergen and Zurich contradicts previously accepted views for Scandinavian geodynamics, where high-elevation parts of the landscape were left almost untouched by the repeated ice sheets.

"The origin and fate of the western Scandinavian landscapes under the repeated ice sheets of the last 2.8 million years has been a highly debated scientific topic for a hundred years," says Professor Ritske S. Huismans, head of the research project and a co-author of the paper. "In our contribution we have, for the first time, managed to demonstrate that the glaciers and ice sheets have eroded away both the Scandinavian fjords and flat high-elevation surfaces during the past glacial times. This supports the idea that the mountain range in western Scandinavian as seen today is a remnant of the more than 400 million years old Caledonian mountain range and has been at high elevations ever since."

The researchers believe that this new conceptual model of topographic glacial imprint may also apply to other high-latitude landscapes, such as the one in Greenland.

"This discovery was made possible by linking two fields, onshore and offshore geology that are usually studied separately. Because onshore erosion results ultimately in offshore sediments, it is fundamental to understand the past sediment record to assess the history of Scandinavian landscapes," Huismans explains. "Our research indicates that erosion must also have occurred in the areas above the fjords, e.g. on top of the flat surfaces and demonstrates that these high elevation flat surfaces characteristic of the Norwegian landscape are in geologically terms young."

The study was made possible because of the large amount of data available for research -- such as seismic profiles and drill cores -- that was acquired offshore Norway by Statoil and other companies. This data offers a very precise image of the Scandinavian sediment history.

Reshaped by glacial erosion

By demonstrating that the entire topography was reshaped by glacial erosion, the study asks for a complete re-interpretation of the tectonic history of Scandinavia.

"This result has important consequences for oil and gas exploration offshore Norway as it aids in the reconstruction of topography in the past, and may also help to better understand past topographic and tectonic evolution of other less-well constrained glaciated areas, such as Greenland. In addition, this study offers a new insight into the landscapes and fjords of western Scandinavia, which are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding areas on the planet, the N?r?yfjord and Geirangerfjord being on the UNESCO world heritage list," Steer says.
