The tools of science have changed since the golden age of physics, but many of the same questions remain

In Brief

  • An annual gathering in Lindau, Germany, brings together promising early-career scientists and veteran Nobel Prize winners in their field. This year's meeting focuses on physics.
  • In honor of the Lindau meeting, Scientific American has collected 12 articles from the magazine's archive, excerpted here, written by winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics.
  • Some of the excerpts recount prize-winning discoveries, some speculate on the future of physics and some address eternal questions: What is the universe made of? And are we alone in it?
  • Even though some of the articles excerpted here were first published many decades ago, a surprising number remain relevant to the ongoing investigations of modern physicists.

?

Every summer nobel laureates converge on Lindau, Germany, to share their wisdom with, and to learn from, up-and-coming scientists hailing from many corners of the globe. This year the 62nd meeting focuses on physics. In honor of that event, the two of us have selected excerpts from some of the most fascinating articles that Nobel winners have published in the magazine over the years, on topics ranging from cosmology to particle physics to technology.

As we gathered these selections, which begin on the opposite page, we were struck anew by the way the problems that puzzled physicists decades ago continue to drive research today. Yes, the field has changed since the days of Albert Einstein, P.A.M. Dirac and Enrico Fermi. Physicists have made vast leaps (such as constructing and honing the Standard Model of particle physics) and encountered strange turns (such as dark energy). Yet many of the questions being tackled now are the same, at root, as those that have spurred research throughout the past century?among them: Why is matter so much more abundant than antimatter? Does the Higgs boson, widely believed to account for the mass of subatomic particles, truly exist? And what does ?spooky action at a distance? betray about the workings of the world?

(AP) ? Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak says the U.S. piracy case against Kim Dotcom is "hokey" and a threat to Internet innovation.

Wozniak and Dotcom spoke out against the federal case in separate interviews with The Associated Press Wednesday. Dotcom, the flamboyant founder of file-sharing site Megaupload, is accused by federal authorities of facilitating Internet piracy on a massive scale. Charged with racketeering and money laundering, he's fighting U.S. attempts to extradite him from New Zealand.

Wozniak said he was visiting New Zealand last month to give a speech when he learned Dotcom couldn't come to see him because he was under house arrest. So Wozniak said he visited Dotcom and the two have kept in touch by email since.

"It's just kind of ridiculous what they did to his life," Wozniak said in a telephone interview. "An awful lot of Kiwis support him. The U.S. government is on thin ground."

Wozniak said plenty of people used Megaupload for legitimate purposes before federal authorities shut it down in January and filed criminal charges against seven of its officers, including Dotcom. In a dramatic raid the same month, New Zealand police swooped down in helicopters onto the grounds of Dotcom's mansion and cut their way into a safe room where they found him hiding. He was jailed for a month before a judge decided he could be monitored from his home.

Wozniak likened the Megaupload site to a highway and those who shared pirated movies and songs to speeding motorists.

"You don't just shut down the whole street because somebody is speeding," he said.

U.S. authorities allege in their indictment that Dotcom and Megaupload deliberately thwarted attempts to remove pirated material from the site by removing individual links but not the pirated content. Prosecutors claim the "mega conspiracy" netted Dotcom and others $175 million in illicit advertising revenue and download fees.

In an email interview, Dotcom said the charges are bogus.

"The more people learn about this case the more they realize that this type of copyright disagreement between Hollywood and new cloud storage technology is a political debate, not something that belongs in the criminal court and certainly not something to justify breaking down the door to my house," he said.

Dotcom said Megaupload had been applauded for its content removal policies. But he also acknowledged the site could host pirated files.

"What people uploaded and downloaded in their storage areas was up to them. One person's licensed music MP3 file is potentially another person's infringing file," he wrote.

Wozniak said he believes that people should pay for content. But he also believes in keeping the Internet open to encourage innovation. He said trying to shut down sites like Megaupload is futile.

"If you've got a huge steamroller coming, instead of trying to stop it, you should get out of the way," he said.

Wozniak, a founding member of the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation which has sought to return frozen Megaupload files to users, said authorities need to release some of Dotcom's frozen financial assets so he can pay his mounting legal fees.

Born Kim Schmitz in Germany, Dotcom, who changed his name in 2005, has been in trouble before. He was convicted in 1998 in Germany of computer fraud and dealing in stolen phone cards. In 2002, he was convicted of manipulating the stock price of an Internet startup. Both times, he was fined but managed to avoid jail time. He also portrayed himself at the time as a super hacker, although German hackers spoken to by the AP say he did little of what he claimed. He moved to New Zealand after gaining residency in 2010.

Asked if he might be being fooled by a clever conman, Wozniak said it "could very well be the case."

"If I hear details that have credibility, I could totally turn against him," Wozniak said. "But I'm not finding it anywhere from what I've heard so far."

Dotcom has portrayed himself as the victim in rare interviews and on his new Twitter account, where he's posted photos of his family. He's also been thumbing his nose at authorities and the case against him. One photo he posted shows him standing in a field, his arms outstretched, with the caption "Flight risk!!!!" Another photo shows a colleague scrubbing bills in a bowl of soapy water: "Money laundering."

The irreverence and anti-authoritarian streak has appealed to many New Zealanders. In the eight days since starting his Twitter account, Dotcom has amassed more than 40,000 followers, rivaling the 51,000 who follow New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key.

Ira Rothken, one of Dotcom's lawyers, said he is pleased with the way New Zealand authorities have relaxed Dotcom's bail rules pending an August extradition hearing by gradually removing the restrictions on his movements and freeing some of his assets so he can pay personal expenses.

Dotcom's lawyers are seeking to have the case against the company ? although not the individuals ? thrown out on the basis that Hong Kong-based Megaupload had no legal presence in the U.S. They're also seeking the release of millions of dollars to pay for the legal fees.

Dotcom said he's optimistic New Zealand will deny the U.S. extradition request and is hopeful the U.S. will eventually drop the criminal case. Then, he said, he'd be free to focus on launching some new products, including a music service he's named "megabox." For now, he's got a new crowd offering support.

"That's why I love the Internet," he tweeted last week. "From zero to 1000 followers in one day. Let's make history together."

'Monster' Colo. fire rages; Obama plans visit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - Firefighters struggled on Wednesday to beat back a fiercely aggressive wildfire raging at the edge of Colorado Springs that has forced at least 35,000 people from their homes and was nipping at the edges of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire, fanned by gusting winds, has gutted an unknown number of homes on the wooded fringes of Colorado's second-most populous city and prompted more evacuations as flames roared out of control for a fifth day.

President Barack Obama plans to pay a visit to the area on Friday to view the damage, the White House said.

The blaze flared Tuesday night with sudden ferocity and quickly overran fire containment lines, invading the northwestern corner of the city. But officials have declined to characterize the extent of property damage there.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown told Reuters that he had "a number in mind" for the approximate tally of homes lost in Tuesday night's firestorm but did not want to release that information until residents of those dwellings were notified.

The blaze left an orange hue over Colorado Springs, and a smoky haze hung in the air, so thick in places that the giant, roiling pall of smoke that continued to billow into the sky over the city was obscured from the ground.

Governor John Hickenlooper said after flying over the fire zone Tuesday night that he saw many homes destroyed in a "surreal," luminous landscape below, but did not give a number.

Pressed for an estimate of property losses on Wednesday, fire information officer Greg Heule said, "We've started the process of identifying the structures, but we haven't completed the inventory," adding "there's still active fire in there."

Brown called the firestorm threatening his city - in a metropolitan area of more than 650,000 people - "a monster" and said that flames were "not even remotely close to being contained."

The fire, which has scorched more than 15,000 acres in the shadow of the famed Pikes Peak mountaintop, was not as intense early on Wednesday as the day before. But thunderstorms hampered firefighting efforts by bringing erratic winds, whipping flames from one direction to another.

"I've never seen any progression like that," incident commander Rich Harvey said at a late-afternoon news conference. "The winds keep shifting on us. Again the winds are causing us problems out here."

The number of evacuees stood at 32,000 on Tuesday night. But after additional residents in and around the nearby town of Woodland Park, population 7,600, were ordered from their homes on Wednesday, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said the number displaced people had grown by about 3,000.

Colorado wildfires have killed four people so far this year in what the governor called "the worst fire season in the history of Colorado," but no serious injuries from the Waldo Fire were reported on Wednesday.

AIR FORCE SENDS HELP

The Air Force Academy said the evacuation zone included two communities of single-family homes on its grounds housing around 2,100 civilian and military personnel and their families. Despite the blaze, the academy will welcome a class of over 1,000 new cadets on Thursday, officials said.

Proximity to the academy, which saw a spot fire break out on its grounds in one vacant corner, seemed to bode well for U.S. government support in responding to the emergency.

The Air Force said it was dispatching up to 25 military helicopters, joining four giant C-130 air tankers already devoted to the effort. Over half of federal firefighting resources are deployed in Colorado, the White House said.

Fire commanders said they have called for reinforcements and expect to have as many as 1,000 personnel on the lines soon.

At a gas station in Colorado Springs, Andrew Heintzelman, 34, said he had been on the roof of his home in the nearby community of Mountain Shadows on Tuesday trying to keep the flames at bay but had since been forced to flee.

"I was spraying the hose on the shingles and the cops came through the neighborhood and told me to get out now," said Heintzelman, 34, who lives with his mother.

Animal welfare groups said shelters had taken in scores of dogs, cats and even a turtle and pet rats displaced by the fire. Of particular concern to veterinarians was the risk that horses could suffer colic from being moved too quickly and that pets were being spooked by the steady wail of sirens.

The Waldo Canyon Fire was one of about a dozen burning across Colorado. The biggest of those, the High Park fire near Fort Collins in the northern part of the state, has consumed 87,250 acres but was 65 percent contained. It now ranks as the most destructive wildfire on record in Colorado after devouring about 250 homes.

Elsewhere across the Rocky Mountain West, a wildfire in Montana that has scorched 19,000 acres in the eastern part of the state has forced 600 residents to leave their homes, said Kent Atwood, a state hazard mitigation officer. An unknown number of houses were destroyed in Montana.

In Utah, authorities found a body in the ashes of the fast-moving Wood Hollow Fire about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City on Tuesday, marking the first fatality in a blaze that has scorched more than 46,190 acres of rolling hills covered by parched cheatgrass and sagebrush.

Colorado accounts for eight of 35 large, active wildfires being fought across the country. The bulk of them were in nine western states - Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California - according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

Nora Ephron: 1941-2012

Director and Academy Award nominated screenwriter Nora Ephron, who wrote some of the sharpest and funniest romantic comedies of the 1980s and 1990s, died June 26 after a battle with leukemia. She was 71.

Ephron's intelligent dialogue and relatable scenarios made her one of the most bankable screenwriters at her peak. Her script for When Harry Met Sally..., which starred Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan in the tale of two close friends who take forever to realize they're perfect for each other, was an incisive look at modern love that influenced scores of romantic comedies to come.

Born in New York City in 1941, Ephron began her professional life as a journalist, and her witty longform pieces for the New York Times, New York magazine, and Esquire put her squarely within the "New Journalism" movement of the 1960s and 1970s. But it was her marriage to Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein that gave Ephron her first shot at screenwriting, when she and her husband collaborated on an ultimately unused rewrite of William Goldman's script for All the President's Men (in which Dustin Hoffman played Bernstein). Silkwood, Ephron's first original script, was based on the life and mysterious death of a nuclear-plant whistleblower and earned Ephron her first Oscar nomination in 1983.

Ephron's novel Heartburn, based on her acrimonious divorce from Bernstein, was a bestseller, and she adapted it to the screen in 1986. Her next script, When Harry Met Sally..., earned Ephron another Oscar nod and made her one of Hollywood's most sought-after screenwriters. In 1993, she directed Sleepless in Seattle, which garnered a third Academy Award nom and generated huge box office numbers.

Following 1998's You've Got Mail, which reunited Sleepless in Seattle co-stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, Ephron worked less frequently; her last credit was the script for 2009's Julie & Julia, another critical and commercial success.

Ephron was married three times. She is survived by her husband, author and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, and two sons from her marriage to Bernstein.

Looking Good With Autoresponders - The Best MLM Home Business ...

When someone sends an email, they would prefer to get an immediate response. Although most responses take time, customers and potential buyers prefer to get their response immediately. To give an immediate response to an email, you can use an autoresponder. They are a great way to let someone know that you received their email, and that you are taking care of their request. Autoresponder messages can be custom tailored, and look much better than simple thank you pages.

Some Internet marketers use their autoresponders to save themselves time and make their customers feel a bit more at ease until they get the time to handle the request or issue. If you set up your autoresponder in your email account, you?ll find that there are many advantages, although the biggest advantage is answering email questions and acting as tech support.

Your autoresponder can act as tech support for your business by answering any questions you receive via email. To make this work smoother, you can always add answers as you go or just include the most common preset answers in your autoresponder. If your website has a technical support page, you can include different addresses for each specific question. When a customer emails the address, the autoresponder at the other end will automatically send them the answer.

Using an autoresponder to answer your email questions can drastically cut down the amount of emails that you need to answer. Instead of having to wait on your response, your customer will get an instant reply. Customers love to get instant replies, which is one of the main reasons why autoresponders are so popular with online businesses and Internet marketing. If customers start to ask questions that your autoresponder isn?t set up for, you can easily add answers to it anytime you need to.

No matter what the question may be, you can use an autoresponder to answer it. With most autoresponders, you simply type the answer to a question or other piece of information into a text file. You can include an answer section on your website as well, where customers will ask their questions. If you set it up so that it includes a mail form, you can add several pages to the answer section. Once a customer sends the question, the autoresponder should immediately send them an answer.

For a growing Internet business, an autoresponder is a must have. If you deal with a lot of customers, you?ll find this tool to be very beneficial. No matter what type of company you may have online, an autoresponder will help you stand out in a crowd ? and keep you looking good night and day. When customers email you and get an immediate response ? they won?t forget it.

?How mixed-up is our dining history? To start with, the word ?dinner? comes from the Latin (via the French) for breakfast. In some centuries and cultures, fasts were broken at dawn. In others, stomachs growled until midday, which is why petit d?jeuner was invented.?

The evening meal has always varied depending on work hours, preparation time, and, most important, available light. In his excellent domestic history, ?At Home,? Bill Bryson notes that if you open your refrigerator door ?you summon forth more light than the total amount enjoyed by most households in the eighteenth century.? Darkness and dining were not happy partners. So it wasn?t until the middle of the 20th century, with the eight-hour workday and the spread of indoor lighting, that we settled on breakfast, lunch, and dinner at morning, noon, and evening.

You know the drill, of course: Breakfast is the eye-opener, the fresh start on the day with juice, muffin ... and, whoa, look at the time! Lunch is the pit stop ? sandwich, salad, or soup wolfed down, often while doing business, far too often at a desk. What did you have for lunch, dear? I really can?t remember.

Then there?s dinner. If the other meals are more or less forgettable, dinner is the real deal. It?s where the fast, for all intents and purposes, is finally broken, the meal that most people make an effort with, even if that means just deciding what toppings to put on a pizza. Dinner has possibilities. It isn?t strictly time-limited. It can relax into the evening.?

Dinner is a time to talk about subjects deeper than the daily to-do list or office politics. More than any other meal, it preserves the essential aspects of communion. There might be candlelight to invite intimacy, as in Virginia Woolf?s touching description of a memorable dinner party in ?To the Lighthouse.? But any mood lighting will do. The menu need not be as fantastic as in ?Babette?s Feast,? but chopping and saut?ing are nice moves. Martha Stewart isn?t required to bless the place settings; but sitting down, using a plate, and wielding utensils properly is commendable.

The main thing is a decision by all who dine together to draw close and share something of themselves over food ? something not overly contentious: a school project, a challenge at work, a discussion of values or relationships. Well, maybe think twice about discussing relationships. You also might want to tiptoe through topics like money. And definitely be careful around politics. Vietnam disrupted many a spaghetti dinner when I was a kid.

Done right, dinner isn?t just a good time. Mary Beth McCauley?s Monitor cover story explores new research showing that children from families that dine together have lower rates of substance abuse, fewer eating disorders, and better grades in school. Dinner is both good for you and crucial to bonding with loved ones. See Mary Beth?s portrait of the 15-member family that Barbara and Bill Walsh nourished over the decades, the older siblings pitching in to help the younger ones. To this day, everyone has remained close. (I especially liked reading that Barbara and Bill made a point of going to dinner once a week ? just the two of them ? ensuring time for their essential bond.)

A proper dinner doesn?t have to happen every night. Nor does it require a big family. It can be with a friend. Or even alone. But you do have to slow down and be intentional about it. On any given day, dinner may be the last best hope that heart will speak to heart ? or at least that you?ll taste your food ? before the lights go out.

Obama ad seeks to counter 'doing fine' criticism

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign is using a new television ad to refute Republican attacks on Obama's recent assertion that the private sector is "doing fine."

The ad says Republican rival Mitt Romney and his "billionaire allies will spend millions to distort the president's words." A clip in the background shows Obama making the comments about the private sector at a recent news conference.

Republicans seized on Obama's words, saying they were a sign that he doesn't understand the economy. Obama and his aides quickly sought to backtrack, insisting the president knows the economy is not doing fine.

In the new ad, titled "Rebuild," Obama says he understands when he talks to Americans that the weak economy "wears on them."

The ads are running in nine states, including Florida and Ohio.

Housemate or partner? | Relationships Australia

By Danielle Ollington*

Have you been married or living with a partner for a few years, yet sleep separately, perhaps even in different rooms? Is your relationship lacking affection and sex?

If you answered yes to these questions, your relationship may be heading for ?housemate? territory, if it isn?t already there.

Other signs can include living separate lives, where perhaps one person is focused on individual pursuits, and the other on caring for the children, with little or no time spent together as a couple.

Women can report feeling like a housekeeper, responsible for cooking, cleaning and washing, but not feeling loved, desired, or appreciated.

You and your partner may still feel close and have fun, or enjoy your children, have great family holidays, but there will be something missing in terms of an emotional connection.

There may be a lack of conflict or fighting, which is not necessarily a good thing. Issues can go underground and impact on a couple?s capacity for intimacy.

Things may feel quite flat,?with neither?partner?initiating new activities, nor bringing positive energy into the relationship.

Moving into housemate territory can result from a range of factors, such as a period of upheaval or trauma, for example moving interstate or experiencing a death in the family.

The dynamics?can also change when a couple starts a family, as individual roles become more distinct, particularly when one partner is at home and the other at work.? It?s easy to lose touch with each other?s worlds when life is busy.

At times, the role of parenting is at odds with being a romantic and sexual person: changing nappies and cleaning toilets are not activities that put you in touch with feelings of romance and sexuality.

Sometimes resentments and hurts can be sitting under the surface so either partner or both may emotionally take aspects of themselves out of the relationship.

Couples can develop ways of interacting with each other that counteract romantic and sexual feelings, for example, when a man feels that his partner is in a mothering role to him, this is at odds with desire and sexuality.

Women can also report feeling like their husband or partner is their child ? again this can interfere with feelings of desire and romance.

Sometimes a pattern can begin and both couples adapt without having chosen this path of being more like housemates.

As well as being an issue for couples who are busy rearing children, the ?housemate? scenario comes up for older couples who may be facing other difficulties as well, like surgery or illness that potentially impacts on sexuality, and transitions like menopause.

There are also partners who act primarily as carers for their mate, often at the expense of many of their own needs.

Being ?housemates? does not necessarily mean the end. The future of the relationship depends on the needs of the two individuals and whether they are being met. If there is shared understanding and agreement that the relationship is about the need for companionship, then there is no issue.

It can also be a way of coping with a particularly busy, sad or stressful time in life ? you may be working well as a team and enjoying each other?s company, but put other needs aside.

However, if one or both partners are unhappy with the arrangement, then the situation needs to be discussed and action taken if the couple are to remain happily in the relationship long term.

Ultimately though, an intimate relationship will contain elements above and beyond the status of a housemate.

The good news is there are ways to get the relationship back on a more intimate footing.

Women often report that when their partner shares the workload at home ? think housework and caring for children ? they are less exhausted and can free up some mind space to consider connecting as a couple in a more romantic or sexual way.

Find ways to see yourself and/or your partner as a sexual being again: buy new clothes, go on dates, remember what attracted you to each other when you first met, compliment your partner, reach out and touch them, tell your partner that you love them and why, listen to your partner. Everyone needs to feel important, valued, and interesting.

Find some ways to inject some energy into your relationship: do different things at the? weekend, spend a night in the city, go on holidays, cultivate new social relationships.

Acknowledge the situation and talk about it.? Find a way to express your needs in a way that is non blaming and enhances your relationship. For example, instead of saying ?You don?t care about my needs?.? Say something like ?I love you and would like us to be closer in lots of ways like..?..?

Develop shared interests: art appreciation, watching movies, dining out, walking the dog, have coffee in a different area than usual, enjoy your grandchildren, go shopping together, exercise together, etc.

Have shared dreams, have a shared vision of what your relationship might look like in five or 10 years.

Remember what you used to do that made you both feel close and connected. Create rituals that join you as a couple and highlight a sense of belonging, for example, sharing a wine before dinner as you discuss your day, reading different sections of the paper together, celebrating your anniversary, holidaying at the same place, etc.

Going to counselling might also be useful.

And remember: relationships are like cars ? they require petrol, care, and maintenance to keep going.

Former MLB star Kent to join 'Survivor'?

Is Survivor about to get its first player who has his own bobblehead doll? According to the site Survivor Fever, Jeff Kent will be among the contestants when the venerable game show kicks off its 25th season (over 12 years) in September. Also on board, according to Survivior Fever, will be Miss Teen USA 2010 Angelia Layton and (the big news) Lisa Welchel ? better known as Blair from The Facts of Life. The gang will be in the Caramoan Islands, the Philippines, this time.

Kent, 44, was the National League MVP in 2000 and played in the 2002 World Series for the Giants. But more importantly he was a contestant on Superstars in 2009, so there?s the athletic game show background. He also came out against gay marriage in the Prop. 8 debate in 2008, which also must have been very attractive to the Survivor producers. They love stirring the pot by cramming the island with a bunch of divergent viewpoints.

As for me, my unblemished record of never seeing an entire episode of Survivor is expected to continue. The only way to break it is if they had both Kent and Barry Bonds on the same season.

Agricultural Consultations: Much Ado? and ... - Business Barbados

Apologies to William Shakespeare for the corruption of the title of his play, but the term used above is typical of what we continue to see in the agricultural sector.? I cannot count the studies that have been done on local? agriculture and which have achieved nothing. How many National Agricultural Consultations have we had over the years? ?What has been achieved as a result ? ?Nothing, as far as I am concerned.

How many interventions have been made in the annual Financial Statements and Budgetary Proposals which have remained just that- proposals. For example:

  1. In 2006: A pilot project at Home Agricultural Station as? a site for research, production and training in agricultural practices ?? never came to pass.
  2. BADMC to be the sole importer of the 14 commodities ?in which the country has a capability to achieve self-sufficiency- not that I think BADMC has the capability to do this , but they should control the import permits for these products? based on accurate production information
  3. In 2007: establishment of a committee to promote the use of Barbadian foods in hotels and guarantee farmers a market for their produce. If it indeed exists, it certainly isn?t working
  4. A government funded private sector managed state of the art central processing facility to address the challenges of the condiments? industry ? never came to pass
  5. $20M to be provided to Ministry of Agriculture to upgrade their eight laboratories- has any work started? While this and other aspects of that project continue to creep at a snail?s pace, agro-processors have to refuse export contracts
  6. Broadening of the Agricultural Payment Guarantee Fund? to cover the payments to farmers who take part in the programme to supply hotels and importers ? I am not aware that this ever got off the ground
  7. $3M to BAMC to continue pre- investment activities during the transitional period in which the sugar industry will be? restructured. No significant progress has been made and the industry is on its knees
  8. In 2008: Focus of sugar industry to change? from producing sugar for export to producing electricity for local use and molasses for the rum export industry ? no progress.
  9. The law relating to praedial larceny will be amended to make it easier to obtain conviction -? no progress
  10. Renewed efforts to successfully develop? through joint venture arrangements with a select number of investors, the Sea Island Cotton industry into a major component of the agricultural, sector- far from developing, the industry has almost disappeared and the cotton variety has been compromised.

We have just completed yet another National Agricultural Consultation. Most ?industry players consider these sessions a waste of time. Comments were also made regarding the strange format of the Consultation which one would think was intended to identify problems in the sector and discuss possible solutions. However, after starting late, which has become the norm in this part of the world, half the day? was taken up with officialdom, hearing what has been heard so many times before from various organisations and we heard of yet another study which is ?being conducted on agriculture in general? and one on the Sea Island Cotton industry.

The result was that the useful part of the programme which? was a panel? discussion by representatives of some of the sub-sectors of agriculture, and Round Table discussions on various topics, was condensed into a very short period, so that no in-depth discussion was possible.

Added to that is the fact that three Town Hall meetings were held in various parts of the country after the National Consultation had taken place. Isn?t this the wrong way around? Shouldn?t there have been meetings with the various sub-sectors to identify constraints and then use the National Consultation to discuss the constraints and recommend solutions ?

Now we have to produce a white paper, supposedly based on the input from these consultations, which will go before Cabinet? and if approved, be the basis of future policy. By that time, I fear we will have no agricultural sector so the policy will not be necessary.

In my opinion,? the answer to the majority of the sector?s problems lies in its reorganization? so that a private sector led Co-ordinating Entity ? the Barbados Agricultural? Trading Trust , oversees a number of market driven trading projects where? individual markets (cruise ships, hotels/restaurants, agro-processing, supermarkets, vendors, farmers? markets, institutions) are twinned with suppliers(large and small farmers, householders, BAS and brokers) production is planned for the markets and? produce is purchased at arranged prices.

This proposal was put forward to government? since 2009, with no response to date. Such procrastination continues to prevent any progress in agriculture and will indeed lead to its demise.

Philadelphia Union Face Sporting KC At PPL Park Tonight

The Philadelphia Union receive a difficult test Saturday night when Sporting Kansas City visits PPL Park at 7 p.m. ET.

Jun 23, 2012 - The Philadelphia Union receive a difficult test Saturday night when Sporting Kansas City visits PPL Park at 7 p.m. ET. The match can be viewed on the Comcast Network.

Interim Union manager John Hackworth is quite impressed by Sporting Kansas City, which enters Saturday trailing D.C. United by one point in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

"First off, I think they're one of the best teams in the league," Hackworth said during Wednesday's weekly press conference at PPL Park. "And I say that in a sense that, attacking wise, if there's someone in this league that's as dangerous as they are, we probably haven't seen it, at least on film. They're extremely dangerous, literally every time they get the ball over the halfway line. Matchups are always hard. They're strong. They're fast. There's some size there. So we have some challenges in front of us for sure."

The Union fell 1-0 last week to D.C. United in Hackworth's debut after replacing the departed Peter Nowak.

China docks spacecraft manually

(L-R) Liu Wang, Jing Haipeng and China's first female astronaut, Liu Yang, smiling after completing the exercise

China has successfully completed its first ever manual docking of a spacecraft with another space module.

Astronauts on the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft docked with the Tiangong-1 lab module without relying on an automated system.

State television broadcast images of Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and China's first female astronaut, Liu Yang, smiling after completing the exercise.

The docking is seen as a key step in the building of a space station, which China hopes to finish by 2020.

A manual docking procedure would be used in the event of a failure with the automated system.

It is regarded as a difficult manoeuvre, bringing gently together two orbiting vessels travelling at thousands of miles an hour.

Liu Wang took charge of the operation, while Liu Yang conducted aerospace experiments.

"The success of the manual docking mission represents a major breakthrough. It was a precise and perfect docking," said Wu Ping, spokeswoman for China's manned space programme.

Manual docking was mastered by the USSR and US in the 1960s.

The Shenzhou-9 spacecraft was launched on 16 June.

It carried out a successful automatic docking when it reached the Tiangong-1 module on 18 June.

Every move of the mission has been watched with patriotic pride by China's state media, the BBC's John Sudworth in Shanghai reports.

Even the astronauts' first space meal - rice, pickled pork, barbecue sauce and tea - was reported, our correspondent says.

Gene mutations cause massive brain asymmetry

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? Hemimegalencephaly is a rare but dramatic condition in which the brain grows asymmetrically, with one hemisphere becoming massively enlarged. Though frequently diagnosed in children with severe epilepsy, the cause of hemimegalencephaly is unknown and current treatment is radical: surgical removal of some or all of the diseased half of the brain.

In a paper published in the June 24, 2012 online issue of Nature Genetics, a team of doctors and scientists, led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, say de novo somatic mutations in a trio of genes that help regulate cell size and proliferation are likely culprits for causing hemimegalencephaly, though perhaps not the only ones.

De novo somatic mutations are genetic changes in non-sex cells that are neither possessed nor transmitted by either parent. The scientists' findings -- a collaboration between Joseph G. Gleeson, MD, professor of neurosciences and pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego; Gary W. Mathern, MD, a neurosurgeon at UC Los Angeles' Mattel Children's Hospital; and colleagues -- suggest it may be possible to design drugs that inhibit or turn down signals from these mutated genes, reducing or even preventing the need for surgery.

Gleeson's lab studied a group of 20 patients with hemimegalencephaly upon whom Mathern had operated, analyzing and comparing DNA sequences from removed brain tissue with DNA from the patients' blood and saliva.

"Mathern had reported a family with identical twins, in which one had hemimegalencephaly and one did not. Since such twins share all inherited DNA, we got to thinking that there may be a new mutation that arose in the diseased brain that causes the condition," said Gleeson. Realizing they shared the same ideas about potential causes, the physicians set out to tackle this question using new exome sequencing technology, which allows sequencing of all of the protein-coding exons of the genome at the same time.

The researchers ultimately identified three gene mutations found only in the diseased brain samples. All three mutated genes had previously been linked to cancers.

"We found mutations in a high percentage of the cells in genes regulating the cellular growth pathways in hemimegalencephaly," said Gleeson. "These same mutations have been found in various solid malignancies, including breast and pancreatic cancer. For reasons we do not yet understand, our patients do not develop cancer, but rather this unusual brain condition. Either there are other mutations required for cancer propagation that are missing in these patients, or neurons are not capable of forming these types of cancers."

The mutations were found in 30 percent of the patients studied, indicating other factors are involved. Nonetheless, the researchers have begun investigating potential treatments that address the known gene mutations, with the clear goal of finding a way to avoid the need for surgery.

"Although counterintuitive, hemimegalencephaly patients are far better off following the functional removal or disconnection of the enlarged hemisphere," said Mathern. "Prior to the surgery, most patients have devastating epilepsy, with hundreds of seizures per day, completely resistant to even our most powerful anti-seizure medications. The surgery disconnects the affected hemisphere from the rest of the brain, causing the seizures to stop. If performed at a young age and with appropriate rehabilitation, most children suffer less language or cognitive delay due to neural plasticity of the remaining hemisphere."

But a less-invasive drug therapy would still be more appealing.

"We know that certain already-approved medications can turn down the signaling pathway used by the mutated genes in hemimegalencephaly," said lead author and former UC San Diego post-doctoral researcher Jeong Ho Lee, now at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. "We would like to know if future patients might benefit from such a treatment. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our results could prevent the need for such radical procedures in these children?"

Syria says it shot down Turkish air force jet

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Syria said Friday it shot down a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian air space, and Turkey vowed to "determinedly take necessary steps" in response.

It was the most clear and dramatic escalation in tensions between the two countries, which used to be allies before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011. Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of the Syrian regime's brutal response to the country's uprising.

Late Friday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said the military spotted an "unidentified aerial target" that was flying at a low altitude and at a high speed.

"The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly," SANA said. "The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases."

Turkey issued a statement Friday night following a two-hour security meeting led by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying Syrian forces downed the plane and that the two Turkish pilots remain missing.

It said Turkey "will determinedly take necessary steps" in response, without saying what those actions would be.

"Following the evaluation of data provided by our related institutions and the findings of the joint search and rescue efforts with Syria, it is understood that our plane was downed by Syria," the statement said, without providing other details.

Relations between Turkey and Syria were already tense before the downing of the F4 plane on Friday.

Turkey has joined nations such as the U.S. in saying that Syrian President Bashar Assad should step down because of the regime's brutal suppression of the uprising in his country. Turkey also has set up refugee camps on its border for more than 32,000 Syrians who have fled the fighting.

Syria and Turkey have expelled each other's ambassadors and Syria has accused Turkey of supporting Syrian opposition and even allowing Syrian rebels to operate out of Turkish soil. Turkey strongly denies the allegations.

After a cross-border shooting by Syrian forces in April, Turkey said it would not tolerate any action that it deemed violating its security. The firing had left two refugees dead at a camp near the town of Kilis just inside Turkey.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Selcuk Unal earlier on Friday rejected allegations that Turkey was sending arms and other equipment to Syrian rebels as baseless. Unal said Turkey was not sending weapons to any of its neighbors, including Syria.

Turkey's military provided no details on the downed plane's mission Friday, but some Turkish TV reports said it was on a reconnaissance flight.

Syria claimed the jet violated its air space over territorial waters, penetrating about 1 kilometer (0.62 mile), but that Syrian vessels joined the search for it, according to Turkey's NTV television. It said Syria forces realized that it was a Turkish jet after firing at it.

Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Istanbul's Bilgi University, told NTV that Syria's action was clearly "hostile," even if it violated its air space.

"They could have either sent their planes to confront it or force it to land, it is a hostile act by any standard," Turan said.

Turan, however, predicted that Syria will try to avoid escalating tensions further.

Erdogan said the plane went down in the Mediterranean Sea about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away from the Syrian town of Latakia. Four Turkish gunboats and three helicopters were searching for the pilots and wreckage of the plane.

The Turkish military said the plane disappeared from its radar and that radio contact was lost at 11:58 a.m. (0958GMT) Friday during a mission flight.

Some eyewitnesses in Turkey's seaside area of Hatay province told private NTV television that the plane was flying so low they thought it would "hit the roofs." They said the plane then flew toward the sea.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton earlier this month had warned about a massing of Syrian forces near Aleppo, saying such a deployment could be a "red line" for Syria's northern neighbor Turkey "in terms of their strategic and national interests."

Bristol Palin Fails To Attract Viewers To New Reality Show

LOS ANGELES, June 21 (Reuters) - Bristol Palin tripped up with TV audiences after less than 750,000 people watched the first episode of her new reality show.
Palin, who found fame in 2008 as the accidentally pregnant unmarried daughter of Republican conservative U.S. vice-presidential contender Sarah Palin, chronicled her life with her now three-year-old son Tripp in the Lifetime show "Life's a Tripp."
But according to audience figures on Thursday, just 726,000 watched the show when it debuted on Wednesday. By contrast, some 3.3 million watched the latest installment of MTV's "Teen Mom" reality series on Wednesday.
"Life's a Tripp" got unenthusiastic reviews from TV critics and proved no match with the U.S. public for the polarizing but charismatic Sarah Palin. The 2010 TV series "Sarah Palin's Alaska" attracted some five million viewers on its first outing, but was canceled after one season. (Reporting By Jill Serjeant; Editing by Paul Simao)
