Walmart does not have to make as much as it does. If could choose to reinvest more in its 1 million workers and in the communities in which they live.
Yes, some of this would come out of shareholders's pockets. But a lot of it would be reinvested back in the company in the form of revenue (employees would spend a lot of their incremental earnings at Walmart) and in reduced turnover.
American corporations are earning the highest profits in history--at the expense of their rank and file workers.
Intelligent capitalism does not just exist to serve "shareholders." It serves all three constituencies--customers, shareholders, and employees. Walmart and other American companies should reinvest their excess profits in their people.
