No more sneezing: Allergen-free house plants

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Plant Biology shows how targeting two bacterial genes into an ornamental plant (Pelargonium), can produce long-lived and pollen-free plants.

Pelargoniums ('Geraniums' and 'Storkbills') have been cultivated in Europe since the17th century and are now one of the most popular garden and house plants around the world. They have been selectively bred to produce a wide range of leaf shapes, flowers and scents, and have commercial traits such as early and continuous flowering, pest and disease resistance and consistent quality.

In a collaborative project, researchers from the Instituto de Biolog?a Molecular y Celular de Plantas (IBMCP) and BIOMIVA S.L. (Spain) modified Agrobacterium tumefaciens (the bacteria responsible for causing crown gall disease) to carry altered genes. One gene, encoding an enzyme Isopentenyl phosphotransferase (ipt) was designed to increase the amount of cytokinin (a plant hormone), and consequently prevent aging (senescence), and the second was engineered to selectively destroy pollen-producing anthers.

The modified DNA was injected into Pelargonium zonale cells by the bacteria, where it was subsequently integrated into the plant's genome. Individual plants were then grown from these transgenic cells. P. zonale plants carrying the modified genes were more compact with increased number of branches and leaves than normal. These plants also had small leaves and flowers, with more vibrant colours, and the extra cytokinin in the leaves meant that these plants lived longer than usual.

Dr Luis Ca?as, one of the researchers from IBMCP explained, "The ipt enzyme catalyzes the rate-limiting step for cytokinin biosynthesis in plants and consequently extra ipt, provided transgenically, produces more cytokinin and prevents the plant cells from aging. In addition, the use of an anther-specific promoter from pea driving the expression of a bacterial gene (ribonuclease), prevents the development of male progenitor cells into anthers and pollen, resulting in pollen-free flowers."

The generation of long-life plants is good news for the gardener who wants a display of flowers for as long as possible and the lack of pollen not only is great for hay fever sufferers but also prevents accidental release of the transgenes into the environment. However the extra cytokinin does not protect against owners forgetting to water their plants...

Australians implant 'world first' bionic eye

Australian scientists said Thursday they had successfully implanted a "world first" bionic eye prototype, describing it as a major breakthrough for the visually impaired.

Bionic Vision Australia (BVA), a government-funded science consortium, said it had surgically installed an "early prototype" robotic eye in a woman with hereditary sight loss caused by degenerative retinitis pigmentosa.

Described as a "pre-bionic eye", the tiny device is attached to Dianne Ashworth's retina and contains 24 electrodes which send electrical impulses to stimulate her eye's nerve cells.

Researchers switched on the device in their laboratory last month after Ashworth had fully recovered from surgery and she said it was an incredible experience.

"I didn't know what to expect, but all of a sudden, I could see a little flash -- it was amazing," she said in a statement.

"Every time there was stimulation there was a different shape that appeared in front of my eye.

Penny Allen, the surgeon who implanted the device, described it as a "world first".

Ashworth's device only works when it is connected inside the lab and BVA chairman David Penington said it would be used to explore how images were "built" by the brain and eye.

Feedback from the device will be fed into a "vision processor" allowing doctors to determine exactly what Ashworth sees when her retina is subjected to various levels of stimulation.

"The team is looking for consistency of shapes, brightness, size and location of flashes to determine how the brain interprets this information," explained Rob Shepherd, director of the Bionics Institute which was also involved in the breakthrough.

The team is working towards a "wide-view" 98-electrode device that will provide users with the ability to perceive large objects such as buildings and cars, and a "high-acuity" 1,024-electrode device.

Patients with the high-acuity device are expected to be able to recognise faces and read large print, and BVA said it would be suitable for people with retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration.

Penington said the early results from Ashworth had "fulfilled our best expectations, giving us confidence that with further development we can achieve useful vision".

"The next big step will be when we commence implants of the full devices," he said.

Carlyle buying DuPont coatings business for $4.9B

(AP) ? The Carlyle Group is buying DuPont's performance coatings business for $4.9 billion in cash, giving it another investment in the automotive and industrial segments.

The private equity firm will also take on $250 million of DuPont's unfunded pension liabilities under the deal disclosed Thursday.

The performance coatings business of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. caters to the automotive and industrial coatings sectors. The business is expected to have 2012 sales of more than $4 billion. It has more than 11,000 workers.

Carlyle's investments in the automotive and industrial segments already include Allison Transmission, PQ Corp. and Hertz.

DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman said in a statement that the transaction is consistent with its long-term strategy of "driving competitive advantages in agriculture and nutrition, advanced materials and biotechnology, which represent high-growth, high-margin opportunities."

DuPont says it is still committed to serving the automotive industry.

"We will continue to work closely with automotive customers to apply our science-powered innovations related to light weighting of vehicles, revolutionary and environmentally friendly refrigerants, biobased seat fabrics and headliners, and next-generation biofuels," Kullman said.

On Wednesday Swiss seed company Syngenta said that it will pay $125 million for DuPont Professional Products' insecticide business, which supplies products for the professional turf, ornamentals and home pest control markets.

The deal with the Carlyle Group is targeted to close in 2013's first quarter. Carlyle says the DuPont transaction will be funded with equity from U.S. buyout fund Carlyle Partners V and Carlyle Europe Partners III.

DuPont's stock fell 17 cents to $49.77 in morning trading Thursday. Its shares have fallen 8 percent since hitting a 52-week high of $53.98 in early May.

SmartMotor communications improvements | Packaging World

Through a small change to the circuitry, this new CDS option decreases the space required when integrating the motor into industrial machinery. The option makes numerous vertical axis applications that would benefit from SmartMotor technology possible by allowing for an integrated brake while using CAN.

The CDS option also makes the control system more efficient and increases simplicity for custom cable assemblies. In addition, this upgrade reduces the cable costs thereby reducing overall machine design costs.

The SmartMotor from Moog Animatics is an advanced, programmable motion controller with an integrated servomotor, drive, amplifier, and encoder inside one package. Each SmartMotor can be a slave or a master to any other SmartMotor, with the ability to link over 100 SmartMotor systems together over one CANbus.

Foxconn announces $226 million half-year net loss, blames usual suspects

Foxconn announces $226 million halfyear net loss, blames usual suspectsManufacturing behemoth Foxconn (Hon Hai) has announced a record net loss of $226 million on turnover of $2 billion for the first half of the year. Unsurprisingly, it attributed the loss to the European debt crisis, global economic slowdown and its customers "continuous struggle" for market share. While it made a big push to encourage new customers, capacity far outstripped demand. In order to stem the tide, it's relocating some of its Shenzhen-based facilities to sites in Northern China -- and it's also in talks with carriers to become an ODM, building white-label smartphones in the same way that Huawei and ZTE do. While the loss isn't a rosy picture, the company does have nearly $2 billion stashed in the bank, so it shouldn't be worrying too much.

America's Leading High-Tech, Venture Capital Centers

The geography of high-tech startups and venture capital appears to be changing, according to new data from the?National Venture Capital Association reported yesterday in?USA Today. The data charts the total number of high-tech startups, the number receiving venture capital investment and the dollar value of that investment for the ten largest high-tech regions in 2011.

My?Martin Prosperity Institute colleague?Zara Matheson mapped these leading centers based on the?USA Today report.

Map by MPI?s Zara Matheson, data courtesy of USA Today and National Venture Capital Association

San Francisco, which includes Silicon Valley, remains the nation?s leading high-tech venture capital center with 3,442 total start-ups and $11.8 billion in venture-capital investment going to 430 companies.

New York is next in start-ups with 1,844, though it lags Boston slightly in VC investment with $2.7 billion compared to $2.8 billion for Boston. New York?s rise is a recent occurrence: Though it has long been a source of venture funds, until recently it was a relatively minor player in high-tech start-ups. Its recent, rapid rise as a high-tech center appears to be powered both by the size and diversity of its industries and markets and also by the growing preference of younger techies for more urban locations.

L.A. is fourth with 1,507 total start-ups and $2.0 billion in VC investment to 129 companies. Washington, D.C., takes fifth with 261 total start-ups and nearly $1 billion in venture capital investment.

Taken as a whole, the Bos-Wash corridor has become a serious player in high-tech venture capital with a total $6.5 billion in VC investment between New York, Boston and D.C., more than half that of the Bay Area.

San Diego, Chicago, Austin, Boulder-Denver, and Seattle round out the top ten.

The?USA Today report notes that: ?High rents in San Francisco and?New York are making other parts of the country, where living expenses are lower, more attractive.?

Here on?Cities, I?ve noted the shift of high-tech and venture capital from the older suburban ?nerdistan? model to an emerging model I call ?urban tech? ? in?New York, San Francisco evenLondon.

We will continue to track these evolving trends in the geography of high-tech venture capital.

Every 4 years, something more than just politics

WASHINGTON (AP) ? So much can change in four years.

Some 16 million babies have been born in the United States since 2008, the last year the Democrats and Republicans met to anoint their presidential nominees. Kids who were toddlers then are starting kindergarten now; that year's nervous high school freshmen are beginning college or work, or at least anxiously looking for jobs.

Nearly 10 million Americans have died, including political lights Geraldine Ferraro, Betty Ford and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who bade his dramatic convention farewell four years ago.

The Iraq war is over, the war in Afghanistan winding down. Osama bin Laden is dead. Yet Guantanamo Bay still holds 168 terror suspects. And too little has changed in a discouraging economy since 2008.

The political conventions are back to ask again if we, as individuals and a nation, are better off than we were four years ago. That raises the question, where will we be four years from now?

It's fashionable these days to complain that the party gatherings no longer matter, that they're just phony made-for-TV moments ? speeches and sappy films and balloon drops strung together into protracted campaign commercials. That's true, as far as it goes.

The conventions no longer matter in picking presidential nominees. But that's because the choosing moved from the old smoke-filled rooms and rowdy delegate halls to a months-long carnival of democracy: debates and caucuses and primary voting across the country.

The conventions are made for TV. But that means made for all to see, across America and even the world. And the audience now gets to talk back, drafting its own instant platform via Twitter and Facebook and all our other electronic impulses.

The conventions are taxpayer-subsidized political commercials. But if they were only that, few would watch. We've seen too many mean ads already. By now most voters have made up their minds about Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, anyway.

At their best, every four years, these mud-slinging, self-serving, partisan-by-definition displays rise to offer something more: moments that transcend politics.

Together, the two conventions make up a national stock-taking, a pause to remember our roots, figure out who we are and decide what's truly important, without feeling too hokey about it. Like a virtual family reunion, Americans gather around their televisions, computers or smartphones to argue or agree, celebrate the good stuff, mourn our losses and regret our mistakes, to regroup, to look ahead.

The conventions are Barbara Jordan, Jesse Jackson and Obama, their very presence on the podium insisting that the American dream no longer be deferred. And Ferraro and Sarah Palin and Hillary Rodham Clinton, bursting through doors once locked to them.

They are the thousands of Vietnam War protesters chanting outside the 1968 Democratic meeting, who couldn't be silenced by the tear gas and billy clubs of the Chicago police.

They are Robert Kennedy eulogizing the slain president who was also his big brother Jack. Nancy Reagan telling America that its Great Communicator is being hushed by Alzheimer's. Mary Fisher pleading with the nation to come to its senses and find its compassion so her children wouldn't feel ashamed someday to say out loud their mother died of AIDS.

Every four years, the political conventions come along to remind us how wrong we were about some things in the past. And that we know nothing, really, about what's to come.

It's no coincidence that Ronald Reagan, a genius at wielding metaphor, chose to speak at the 1976 GOP convention about what he would write in a time capsule letter to the future.

The conventions are time capsules, lovingly created and then buried in the rush to Election Day.

Dig through past conventions, their speeches and platforms, and you'll find a record not just of Americans' politics but also of their worries and fears, longings and dreams. Not just how the parties gave us Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt. But also how passion to do something about slavery and civil rights and women's rights and poverty percolated up from the people and into the convention halls and the White House.

This year's speakers will talk about gay marriage, religious freedom, women's health, the national debt, joblessness. And someone may say something in a way that sticks in the national consciousness and helps build a consensus that one day, in hindsight, will seem blazingly obvious.

Conventions are far from perfect. Too much of their time is wasted on things parochial and elitist and just silly. Not much has changed since Bob Dole summed up the GOP event of 1980: "The introducers spoke longer than the speakers. And the speakers spoke too long."

But what else have we got? Self-consciously triumphant inaugurals, ponderous State of the Union speeches. Debates promise some spontaneity, but they're too narrow, focused only on four candidates.

The conventions are a political Olympics, democracy as spectator sport: Score the best efforts of mayors and governors and senators who might be president someday. Catch those candidates and insiders who claim to hate Washington and loathe politics openly reveling in the raucous, strapping national debate, whatever they prefer to call it. Watch regular folks still willing to turn out, in silly hats and buttons, to cheer for something they believe in.

Sure, it can feel predictable. But that's something to be grateful for ? a sign that today's primaries are running fairly smoothly and the nation's many troubles are less devastating than the crises of the past.

Isn't that a good thing so long as it lasts?

After all, the political stage managers won't be able to corral the chaos outside or quiet rising voices within the hall if America faces another crisis as deep as the Depression, another war as despised as Vietnam, another moral test as big as civil rights.

Last year: 12-1, 7-1 in SEC

    Final 2001 poll: 1st-AP, 1st-Coaches

Starters back: 6 offense, 4 defense

Outlook: Top-ranked defense might drop off with only 4 returning starters, but senior FS Robert Lester and NG Jesse Williams are anchors. QB AJ McCarron excelled in title win over LSU, and Saban is high on frosh RB T.J. Yeldon. Schedule includes neutral-site Michigan opener Saturday and road tests at Arkansas, Missouri and LSU.

    4. OKLAHOMA

    Conference: Big 12

Coach: Bob Stoops, 13th year (139-34)

    Last year: 10-3, 6-3 in Big 12

    Insight Bowl: Def. Iowa, 31-14

    Final 2001 poll: 16th-AP, 15th-Coaches

Starters back: 8 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Like USC's Barkley, QB Landry Jones also passed on projected first-round NFL draft pick to lead veteran offense that adds freshman WR Trey Metoyer and returns injured RB Dominique Whaley. Ex-Arizona coach Mike Stoops is back as defensive coordinator. Tough finish at West Virginia, vs. Oklahoma State and at TCU.

    5. FLORIDA STATE

    Conference: ACC, Atlantic Division

Coach: Jimbo Fisher, third year (19-8)

Last year: 9-4, 5-3 in ACC

Outlook: Seminoles' defense ranked fourth in nation and second against rush and returns bookend DEs Brandon Jenkins and Bjoern Werner and top CBs Xavier Rhodes and Greg Reid. Senior QB EJ Manuel is mobile and freshman WR Kelvin Benjamin (6-6, 242) joins Rashad Greene. Noles' key game is Sept. 22 vs. Clemson.

    6. OREGON

    Conference: Pac-12, North Division

Coach: Chip Kelly, fourth year (34-6)

    Last year: 12-2, 8-1 in Pac-12

    Rose Bowl: Def. Wisconsin, 45-38

    Final 2001 poll: 4th-AP, 4th-Coaches

Starters back: 4 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Redshirt freshman QB Marcus Mariota and soph Bryan Bennett may rotate until one establishes himself, but RB Kenjon Barner and all-purpose RB/WR/PR De'Anthony Thomas provide fireworks. Vet defense adds freshman DL Arik Armstead (6-8, 300). Ducks might get two shots at USC on Nov. 3 in LA and in Pac-12 title game.

    7. WISCONSIN

    Conference: Big Ten, Leaders Division

Coach: Bret Bielema, seventh season (60-19)

Last year: 11-3, 6-2 in Big Ten

Rose Bowl: Lost to Oregon, 45-38

    Final 2001 poll: 10th-AP, 11th-Coaches

Starters back: 5 offense, 6 defense

Outlook: Ex-Maryland QB Danny O'Brien replaces ex-N.C. State QB Russell Wilson as transfer-in-residence, but he has two years of eligibility. Heisman finalist Montee Ball, who tied NCAA record with 39 TDs, returns. Badgers must improve run defense but have cakewalk to Big Ten title game since division-rivals Ohio State and Penn State are ineligible.

    8. LSU

    Conference: SEC, West Division

Coach: Les Miles, eighth year (75-18)

Last year: 13-1, 8-0 in SEC

BCS Championship: Lost to Alabama, 21-0

    Final 2001 poll: 2nd-AP, 2nd-Coaches

Starters back: 6 offense, 5 defense

Outlook: When Heisman finalist Tyrann Mathieu was kicked off and reportedly entered drug rehab, Tigers lost big-play dimension at CB/PR. But defense is elite with DEs Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo, and QB Zach Mettenberger is upgrade from departed Jordan Jefferson. Tigers get South Carolina, Alabama at home, finish at Arkansas.

    9. MICHIGAN

    Conference: Big Ten, Legends Division

Coach: Brady Hoke, second year (11-2)

Last year: 11-2, 6-2 in Big Ten

Sugar Bowl: Def. Virginia Tech, 23-20 (OT)

    Final 2001 poll: 12th-AP, 9th-Coaches

Starters back: 6 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Brady Hoke executed shocking turnaround in first season thanks to makeover of defense ranked 17th in country led by DBs Jordan Kovacs and J.T. Floyd. QB Denard Robinson, a run-pass Heisman candidate, must cut down 15 interceptions. Of five toughest games, only Michigan State on Oct. 20 is at Big House.

    10. CLEMSON

    Conference: ACC, Atlantic Division

Coach: Dabo Swinney, fifth season (29-19)

Last year: 10-4, 6-2 in ACC

Starters back: 7 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Tigers are loaded on offense with QB Tajh Boyd, RB Andre Ellington and WRs Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins. New defensive coordinator Brent Venables must slow opponent scoring from 29.3 per game but has experienced athletes at LB and DB. Upset on Sept. 22 at Florida State paves way to ACC title game.

    11. WEST VIRGINIA

    Conference: Big 12

Coach: Dana Holgorsen, second year (10-3)

Last year: 10-3, 5-2 in Big East

    Orange Bowl: def. Clemson, 70-33

    Final 2001 poll: 17th-AP, 18th-Coaches

Starters back: 7 offense, 6 defense

Outlook: Mountaineers hope momentum of Orange Bowl blowout and Heisman candidacy of QB Geno Smith leads to fast Big 12 start. Spread offense with WRs Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin fits new league, but new def.-coordinator Joe DeForest from Oklahoma State faces major rebuild changing to 3-4 scheme.

    12. SOUTH CAROLINA

    Conference: SEC, East Division

Coach: Steve Spurrier, eighth year (55-35)

Last year: 11-2, 6-2 in SEC

Capital One Bowl: def. Nebraska, 30-13

    Final 2001 poll: 9th-AP, 8th-Coaches

Starters back: 7 offense, 6 defense

Outlook: If RB Marcus Lattimore returns to form after October ACL tear, Gamecocks can challenge Georgia in SEC East. Connor Shaw has stabilized QB spot, and defense that ranked third nationally benefits from maturation of soph DE Jadeveon Clowney. Georgia visits on Oct. 6 before trips to LSU, Florida.

    13. TCU

    Conference: Big 12

Coach: Gary Patterson, 12th year (109-30)

Last year: 11-2, 7-0 in Mountain West

Poinsettia Bowl: def. La. Tech, 31-24.

    Final 2001 poll: 14th-AP, 13th-Coaches

Starters back: 7 offense, 5 defense

Outlook: QB Casey Pachall and talented WRs Josh Boyce, Brandon Carter and Skye Dawson figure to keep offense humming near last year's 40.9 points pace. Tough defense features DE Stansly Maponga, LB Kenny Cain, but secondary lacks experience. Frogs might be 7-0 before finishing stretch (at OSU, at WVa, vs. K-State, at Texas, vs. OU).

    14. ARKANSAS

    Conference: SEC, West Division

Coach: John L. Smith, first year

Last year: 11-2, 6-2 in SEC

Cotton Bowl: def. Kansas State, 29-16

    Final 2001 poll: 5th-AP, 5th-Coaches

Starters back: 8 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Former Razorbacks assistant John L. Smith, who has 18 years head-coaching experience, is capable replacement for Bobby Petrino, but his scandalous exit disrupts program. All-SEC QB Tyler Wilson and RB Knile Davis lead top-flight offense. Defense must improve in big games, but gets Alabama, Rutgers and LSU at home.

    15. STANFORD

    Conference: Pac-12, North Division

Coach: David Shaw, second year (11-2)

    Last year: 11-2, 8-1 in Pac-12

Fiesta Bowl: lost to Okla. State, 41-38 (OT)

    Final 2001 poll: 7th-AP, 7th-Coaches

Starters back: 5 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Junior Josh Nunes succeeds No. 1 NFL draft pick Andrew Luck at QB having completed 1 of 2 passes for 7 yards. But Cardinal relies on its OL factory, RB Stepfan Taylor and possibly freshman Barry Sanders Jr., son of the Hall of Famer. Nation's No. 3 rush defense returns great linebacking crew.

    16. Boise State

    Conference: Mountain West

Coach: Chris Peterson, seventh year (73-6)

Last year: 12-1, 6-1 in Mountain West

Las Vegas Bowl: def. Arizona State, 56-24

    Final 2001 poll: 8th-AP, 6th-Coaches

Starters back: 7 offense, 2 defense

Outlook: Broncos replace NCAA's winningest QB, Kellen Moore, with junior Joe Southwick. He leans on vet O-line and WRs Matt Miller and Mitch Burroughs. Defense with only two returning starters gets major tests in opener at Michigan State and Sept. 22 vs. BYU, but Broncs will dominate MW before Big East move.

    17. RUTGERS

    Conference: Big East

    Coach: Kyle Flood, first year

Last year: 9-4, 4-3 in Big East

Pinstripe Bowl: def. Iowa State, 27-13

    Final 2001 poll: 31st-AP, 30th-Coaches

Starters back: 6 offense, 8 defense

Outlook: Strong defense, soft schedule make Knights surprise BCS bowl contender. Big East defensive POY Khaseem Greene and DT Scott Vallone of Central Islip lead No. 14 defense, which adds freshman DE Darius Hamilton. New coach Kyle Flood chose Gary Nova over Chas Dodd at QB. BE title might be prize vs. Louisville Nov. 29.

    18. VIRGINIA TECH

    Conference: ACC, Coastal Division

Coach: Frank Beamer, 26th year (209-98-2)

Last year: 11-3, 7-1 in ACC

Sugar Bowl: lost to Michigan, 23-20 (OT)

    Final 2001 poll: 21st-AP, 17th-Coaches

Starters back: 2 offense, 8 defense

Outlook: Versatile QB Logan Thomas, who passed for 3,013 yards and ran for 11 TDs, carries rebuilding offense with freshman RB Michael Holmes. But 10th-ranked defense returns 8 starters, including DE James Gayle and LBs Bruce Taylor and Tariq Edwards. Hokies have clear path to ACC title game in Coastal Division.

    19. OHIO STATE

    Conference: Big Ten, Leaders Division

    Coach: Urban Meyer, first year

Last year: 6-7, 3-5 Big Ten

Gator Bowl: lost to Florida, 24-17

    Final 2001 poll: NR-AP, NR-Coaches

Starters back: 7 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Hiring of Ohio native Meyer, a two-time national champ at Florida, erases Jim Tressel ouster despite bowl ban. QB Braxton Miller's run-pass ability fits Meyer's offense, and 19th-ranked defense has DLs John Simon and Johnathan Hankins and influx of freshman talent. Finish at Wisconsin and vs. Michigan are Buckeyes' bowls.

    20. UTAH

    Conference: Pac-12, South Division

Coach: Kyle Whittingham, eighth year (66-25)

    Last year: 8-5, 4-5 in Pac-12

Sun Bowl: def. Georgia Tech, 30-27 (OT)

    Final 2001 poll: NR-AP, NR-Coaches

Starters back: 5 offense, 7 defense

Outlook: Rocky Pac-12 debut, but QB Jordan Wynn returns after missing nine games for shoulder surgery. RB John White IV averaged 116.8 yards, and Utes won five of last six. DT Star Lotulelei and safeties Brian Blechen and Eric Rowe lead solid defense. Toughest games are at home vs. BYU and USC.

    21. LOUISVILLE

    Conference: Big East

Coach: Charlie Strong, third year (14-12)

Last year: 7-6, 5-2 in Big East

Belk Bowl: lost to North Carolina State, 31-24

    Final 2001 poll: NR-AP, NR-Coaches

Starters back: 6 offense, 6 defense

Outlook: Sophomore QB Teddy Bridgewater and team with only nine returning seniors matured late last season. Offense adds redshirt freshman RB Corvin Lamb, and starting secondary returns from defense ranked 17th vs. scoring, 10th vs. rushing. If Cards handle strong non-conference schedule, they should roll to Big East finale at Rutgers.

    22. MICHIGAN STATE

    Conference: Big Ten, Legends Division

Coach: Mark Dantonio, seventh year (44-22)

Last year: 11-3, 7-2 in Big Ten

Outback Bowl: def. Georgia, 33-30 (3OT)

    Final 2001 poll: 11th-AP, 10th-Coaches

Starters back: 5 offense, 8 defense

Outlook: Nation's 6th-ranked defense is largely intact, including potential first-rounders in DE William Gholston and CB Johnny Adams. Junior QB Andrew Maxwell replaces departed Kirk Cousins, but RB Le'Veon Bell keys attack. Spartans get Boise State, Notre Dame, Ohio State at home before back-to-back tests at Michigan and Wisconsin. Tough.

    23. KANSAS STATE

    Conference: Big 12

Coach: Bill Snyder, 21st year (159-83-1)

    Last year: 10-3, 7-2 in Big 12

    Cotton Bowl: lost to Arkansas,29-16

    Final 2001 poll: 15th-AP, 16th-Coaches

Starters back: 8 offense, 6 defense

Outlook: Collin Klein set FBS record for QBs with 27 rushing touchdowns to lead offense that averaged 31.8 points. Starting backfield and receivers all return, and Wildcats add junior college WR Marquez Clark (98 catches-1,639 yards). K-State won eight games by a TD or less and must improve defense that allowed 27.9 points.

    24. NORTH CAROLINA

    Conference: ACC, Coastal Division

    Coach: Larry Fedora, first year

Last year: 7-6, 3-5 in ACC

Independence Bowl: lost to Missouri, 41-24

    Final 2001 poll: NR-AP, NR-Coaches

Starters back: 7 offense, 4 defense

Outlook: Former Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora should right a ship rocked by scandal that led to postseason ban. ACC pass efficiency leader Bryn Renner and 1,000-yard RB Giovani Bernard lead talented offense. New defense features five DBs. Tar Heels get division foes Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech at home. No Florida State or Clemson.

    25. CENTRAL FLORIDA

    Conference: C-USA, East Division

Coach: George O'Leary, ninth year (50-51)

    Last year: 5-7, 3-5 in C-USA

    Bowl: None

    Final 2001 poll: NR-AP, NR-Coaches

Starters back: 3 offense, 6 defense

Outlook: Knights should rebound after losing six games by TD or less. Defense ranked ninth nationally led by DE Victor Gray and FS Kemal Ishmael. QB Blake Bortles was 68 percent passer in expanded backup role, and transfer Miami RB Storm Johnson joins deep backfield ahead of move to Big East in 2013.
