Recently, as I was nursing my three-month-old son, I came across another writer taking yet another swipe at the Church and its position on the HHS health care mandate business.

As a Catholic woman, I?ve had it with these weak arguments in favor of birth control (including the false argument that 98 percent of Catholic women have used birth control in their lifetime), and the insinuation that women want ? even need ? birth control.
My fellow Catholic sisters, you should be fed up, too.
As the Church continues its fight against the mandate on the grounds of religious liberty (Oh, and by the way, the Lutherans, Southern Baptists and others have joined us, too) there?s been an interesting parallel discussion going on about artificial contraception and why women ?need? it. The birth control issue, it seems, has gone from the elephant in the room to front and center.
Somehow, women have been conned into thinking that the pill helps them take control of their fertility. And why should we believe otherwise? For exactly 28 days, each pill, meticulously delivering the exact amount of hormones, presents a perfect cycle, from start to finish. Have sex, don?t worry about producing babies until you?re ready. What could be better, right?
Problem is, it?s just placing a mask on top of a woman?s true fertility.
And I had to learn that the hard way.
Like many other young women in college these days (and many high school girls, too), I went on the birth control pill right before I got married. In a way, it was a rite of passage. I told my OB/GYN at the time my husband-to-be and I didn?t want to have kids right away, so she offered me a prescription for the pill. It was a no-brainer.
I should have known then what havoc it would wreak on my body. I remember right after my first dose, I began experiencing horrible cramping. Totally normal, my OB/GYN instructed. It will take your body a little while to get used to the change in hormones.
Several years of wedded bliss passed, and my husband and I decided we were finally ready to welcome children into our lives. I went off the pill. But as I quickly discovered, my cycles were not normal anymore.
It started with the brown bleeding. Then the irregular bleeding at various points in my cycle. I was confused. This wasn?t what I remembered my cycles to be before I went on the pill. It was then that I realized I never really was in control of my own fertility while I was on the pill.
After more than six months of trying to conceive, I finally went back to my doctor. I told her, ?I don?t think this brown bleeding is right.? She wrote it off as normal. At my urging, we tested my progesterone level; it was low, but good enough to conceive, she said. Something didn?t quite settle with me, though. I started reading everything I could about fertility and charting my own cycles.
Out of desperation, I emailed Diane Daly, director of the St. Louis archdiocesan Office of Natural Family Planning. I had befriended her through my work as a reporter for the Review and told her my whole story. I admit, I was embarrassed at the time. For years, I had been writing about the good work that her office did with NFP, but at the time, I told myself that personally, NFP wasn?t for me.
Diane didn?t bat an eyelash. She said, ?Come see me.?
For the following months, we got down to the work of charting my cycles using the Creighton Model FertilityCare System. Not only did we discover that my low progesterone was a problem ? in that it had the ability to hinder my chances of carrying a baby to term ? but also that potential fibroids and endometriosis, based on the irregular bleeding, were potentially contributing to my infertility.
That, my friends, was empowering.
I could have been devastated by the news; but instead I took it as an opportunity to understand more about how my body works. Diane referred me to Dr. Brian Gosser, a Catholic OB/GYN who specializes in NFP. He looked over my charting history and immediately scheduled me for a laproscopy to see what was causing the irregular bleeding. Pretoria?s cabinet this week approved two bills for submission to parliament that amend the Labour Relations Act (LRA) and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).
The provisions in the BCEA that deal with the prohibition and regulation of child labour are to be extended to cover all work by children, not only work by children as employees. And the maximum prison sentence for an offence involving child or forced labour will be increased from three to six years. The amendments have been proposed to bring the BCEA in line with South Africa's International Labour Organisation Convention obligations.
The other key proposals are designed to tackle temporary labour and prevent exploitation of workers.
Labour minister Mildred Oliphant said the amendments had their origins in the growing ?informalisation? of work that had become a feature of the country?s labour market over the past decade. To stop workers continually being used as casual workers, temporary work will be limited to six months.
?When it comes to the fixed term contract - that should be guided on when that project is going to be finalised. Therefore, those workers will be taken as fixed term contract workers. The workers must be paid equally, irrespective of whether that worker is a temporary worker or a permanent worker,? she said.
Provisions will be introduced to facilitate unionisation of workers, agreements to cover vulnerable workers and ensure the right to permanent employment for affected workers.
The bills will be considered by the Portfolio Committee on Labour before being submitted to the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces respectively for adoption.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? A Marine facing dismissal for running a Facebook page called Armed Forces Tea Party that criticizes the Obama administration is still speaking out but has been getting little support from military law experts and free speech advocates who say he may have crossed the line.
Sgt. Gary Stein planned to speak at a tea party meeting in San Diego County later Thursday, a day after the Marine Corps notified him that it is moving to dismiss him for violating the Pentagon's policy barring troops from engaging in political activities.
The military has had a policy since the Civil War limiting the free speech of service members, including criticizing the commander in chief.
David Loy, of the American Civil Liberties Union in San Diego County, said he has not followed Stein's case closely, but that based on what he has seen in the media he thinks there may be a legitimate concern on the part of the Corps about Stein appearing to be speaking as a member of the armed forces because of his Facebook page's name.
"The military has a very strong interest and appropriately so to remaining neutral," he said. "The last thing we want is our military taking side on political issues."
Former Navy officer David Glazier, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, agreed.
"He's really rubbing the government's nose in it," he said. "It's really hard to have sympathy for him."
Stein said he is not swayed. He said he received hundreds of emails from service members and the public in support of him.
"They're entitled to their opinions but I still think this is a freedom of speech issue," Stein said. "I'm standing up for the Constitution."
Stein, a nine-year member of the Corps, said he started the page to encourage fellow service members to exercise their free speech rights.
The Marine Corps said in a statement that it decided to take administrative action after Stein declared on Facebook that he would not follow unlawful orders from Obama. He later criticized the comments of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
According to Pentagon directives, military personnel in uniform cannot sponsor a political club; participate in any TV or radio program or group discussion that advocates for or against a political party, candidate or cause; or speak at any event promoting a political movement. Commissioned officers also may not use contemptuous words against senior officials, including the defense secretary or the president.
Stein said his statement about Obama was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan. In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if those orders included detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights.
Stein said in addition to being discharged, he would have his rank reduced to lance corporal if he is proven to be in violation. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego on Wednesday and given a desk job with no access to computers.
Stein was first cautioned by his superiors at Camp Pendleton in 2010, after he launched his Facebook page and criticized Obama's health care overhaul. Stein volunteered to take down the page while he reviewed the rules at the request of his superiors.
He said he determined he was not in violation and relaunched the page. Stein said he now plans to fight the charges. He had applied to extend his service, which was set to expire in a few months.
Former military prosecutor Lisa Windsor said since the Civil War, military members have been testing those limits and gotten in trouble. Now those cases can go global because of the Internet.
"I think they've been very lenient with him so far," Windsor said.
Stein said he will not wear his uniform when he speaks to tea party supporters but he likely will mention his case.

Stocks end big week with a whimper
Dow and Nasdaq stock indexes edge down Friday after gaining more than 2 percent for the week. S&P sees small rise, despite an unexpected decline in consumer sentiment.
It was a mundane end to an electrifying week on the?stock?market.
Skip to next paragraphStock?indexes wavered indecisively between small gains and losses Friday before closing mixed. Earlier in the week, the Standard & Poor's 500 and the Nasdaq composite index were on a tear, hitting levels that hadn't been reached in years.
On Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average and the Nasdaq both ended the day down. The Dow fell 20.14 points to 13,232.62. The Nasdaq fell 1.11 points to 3,055.26. The broader S&P 500 index edged up 1.57 points to 1,404.17.
Despite Friday's losses, the three major indexes were all still up more than 2 percent for the week. The Dow had its first down day after seven straight gains, ending its longest winning streak since February 2011.
Investors were weighing competing reports about the health of the U.S. economy. A key measure of consumer sentiment came in lower than expected, and high gas prices continued to weigh down hopes about a recovery. On the plus side, prices for other goods, including food, stabilized.
Telly Zachariades, a partner at The Valence Group investment bank, said the market appears to be on the upswing, even if it's marred by a few off-days. "It's almost like today was a spring training game that ended up getting rained out," he said.
Others think the market's rise earlier this week only masks underlying problems in the economy's fundamentals, like uncertainty over oil prices and tax policies and the country's burgeoning deficit.
"The market is giving us a free pass on our unsustainable fiscal positions through the presidential election," said Barry Knapp, head of equity strategies at Barclays Capital. "But in 2013, we're going to have to deal with this."
"What we've seen today," Knapp added, "is a little bit of a warning sign."
The market's back-and-forth pattern this week was caused partly by conflicting news about the economy. The University of Michigan's closely watched consumer sentiment index came in below analysts' expectations, driven by worries about rising gas prices. The Labor Department also noted that gas prices soared 6 percent in February.
Many analysts think the higher gas prices will crimp the U.S. economy by shrinking the amount of money that people have to spend on discretionary purchases. Gas is currently selling for an average of $3.83 per gallon ($1 a liter) in the U.S., 31 cents more than a month ago.
The price of gas has spiked as Iran's nuclear program sows tension in the Middle East. Some analysts also blame the Federal Reserve, which has pumped cheap money into the economy in an attempt to help it recover. That has also put pressure on the U.S. dollar. When the dollar falls in value, it takes more of them to buy the same amount of oil.
The Labor Department also noted that inflation in other sectors seemed under control. Food prices, which have been rising, were unchanged for the first time in 19 months.
Positive signs from bonds and the European markets added to the confusion about where the market was going. The yield on the 10-year Treasury continued to rise, reaching 2.30 percent late Friday compared with 2.03 percent the week before. That's the highest level since October and a sign that investors are more confident in the economy. Markets in Europe also finished higher.
The earlier part of the week was an exhilarating ride for the?stock?market. Both the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 crossed key milestones. The Nasdaq closed above 3,000 for the first time since December 2000; The S&P closed above 1,400 for the first time since June 2008. On Tuesday, the Dow, the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 all recorded their biggest percentage gains of the year.
The euphoria was brought on by what investors saw as encouraging news about employment and retail sales. Some cautioned that the improvements were incremental and unconvincing, driving short-term market surges but little else.
"It's becoming so much of a sound bite economy," said Ziad Abdelnour, CEO of private equity firm Blackhawk Partners.
In the U.S., Bank of America led the Dow higher, rising more than 6 percent after a report that its proportion of delinquent loans fell in February. Buffalo Wild Wings fell more than 3 percent after a Wedbush analyst lowered his rating to the equivalent of hold from buy, noting the high cost of wings.
Energy companies were the biggest gainers in the S&P 500 index. Transocean, an offshore drilling company, rose nearly 5 percent after it reported that it had secured several new contracts. Analysts from at least three companies raised their price targets on the company.
