A long legal battle has come to an interesting and controversial end. ?A black church is found to be the owner of a building where KKK t-shirts and robes are being sold. ?A judge ruled that the New Beginnings Baptist Church is the owner of a building that contains ?The Redneck Shop,? a place that has a KKK museum, among other things.
The building?s ownership was given to Rev. David Kennedy in 1997 by a Klansman who was fighting with others inside the group. ? But there was a clause in the contract which stated that John Howard, a KKK grand dragon for the Carolinas, could operate his store inside the building until he died.
The church tried for years to have the property inspected, eventually going to court in 2008. ? Three years later, a judge finally ruled in their favor.
?If anything turns people off, they shouldn?t come in here,? Howard told The Associated Press in 2008. ?It?s not a thing in here that?s against the law.?
The Redneck Store has been challenged by the community since it was founded. ?A man crashed his van through the front window of the building and African Americans have protested the store?s existence as well.
?It has been a long time coming,? said Kennedy. ?We knew we had done everything right. ? The court knows that we have suffered.?
He also says that some of the members of his congregation are afraid to stand up for racial justice.
?A lot of people became so afraid,? Kennedy said. ?I just told them that it is part of our faith to endure.?
